Gillem de Gellone, king of Septimania, descended from King David, brother of the head rabbi of France, ancestor of every modern royal in Europe, and despite being of Jewish descent, a canonized saint. At the coronation of Charlemagne, it was Gillem who actually placed the imperial crown on the head of Charles. He was a fierce warrior and repeatedly frustrated Saracen attempts to invade France.
