Reccomendation for a good single malt Scotch

Mr. Lobo

First Post
Hello all,

I got an office at work for a short time period.

My first personal office ever!

While I have the time to savor this I wanted to keep a bottle of Scotch in the bottom drawer of my desk like the BigWigs do and was hoping for a little guidance. I am well past the legal drinking age here in the US by the way.

Thoughts?

Well, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are good-quality "generic" single malt scotches. I prefer a more robust, "peaty" scotch. My recommendations are to try Glenkeith, which has a nice hint of vanilla or Highland Park, which is good and smoky. I, personally, would shy away from Laphroaig, which has a "mediciney" flavor.

The big question is, do you really like scotch? Will you be serving it to others who appreciate scotch? How do you feel about ice and is it available?

Thanks for the suggestions and good questions.

Ice isn't a problem. I tend not to use ice for sippin' drinks. I am a newbie to the Scotch territory - I can't imagine shooting it. I guess I better get some "special" glasses for service. I'll probably only be sharing this with just a couple of other people, one of whom is from England and says she likes a good single malt. Unfortunately, she is away on a business trip for the time being so I can't ask her about this right now.

Do I really like Scotch? I don't know. I've tried Glenlivet before but only rarely. Your reccomendation of Glenkeith sounds good to me. Sounds like I'll go out for sampling (based on suggestions here) before I go for the big buy.

There's got to be some places in Baltimore that have a variety of these drinks available.

Gotta second the Glenlivet or Glenfiddich. Comparatively inexpensive and easy to find. Although you can get into much better Scottish whiskeys, these are a great place to start. Used to like them a wee bit too much myself, and got to where I only bought them for very special occasions.

And an etc...

Single malts are not Scotch. They are Scottish Whiskey. Scotch specifically refers to a blended Scottish Whiskeys, supposedly worked up for English lords who couldn't stomach the straight stuff. No idea if that is true, but a Scotch is definitely a blend.

Depends on your taste preference. There are some decent lighter-bodied single malts such as Glenlivet and Dalwhinnie (which has a slight floral note to my schnoz), moving up to Oban and Cragganmore, and then swinging into the peaty fightin' whisky such as Talisker, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, and Ardbeg. Ardbeg is arguably the peatiest thing next to an old sock but I like it for all that --- and it's smooth as silk.

Another nice one is Aberlour, which has a good oaky finish.

On my shelf right now are bottles of Talisker (peaty goodness), Lagavulin (nectar of the gods --- smoky and reminiscent of the sea), and Glenmorangie in a port cask finish. Mmmmm. The last one complements a cigar, but I somehow doubt you'll be torching a stogie in the new office... :D

Those are on my shelf as well, plus a bottle of Dalwhinnie and Macallan.
