You start with the spellbook for free.

Lots of languages are available. Each different color dragon has a language, pretty much all humanoid races have their own language... The list is far too numerous to count. You can also learn ancient languages, like "Ancient Common", if you like. Or, you can choose not to fill all your language slots to start, and learn new languages later as you decide you need them. What sort of languages did you have in mind?

I think i have some ideas. Just need sorting. in high school i failed basic composition because of this mental block i get. the third time i got a B- or so.

Languages associated with spellcasting and spell craft. Draconic, infernal/abyssal/celestial, giant, some sort of ancient language. This gives you an idea.

1e didn't have any specifically "spellcasting-associated" languages. However, you could learn the language of certain intelligent monsters; a partial list is below:

Beholder, Brownie, any single color of Dragon, Dryad, Elf, any single type of Giant (esp. Cloud or Storm Giant), Gnome, Lammasu, Mind Flayer, Naga (Guardian, Spirit, or Water), Nixie, Nymph, Ogre Mage, Pixie, Shedu, Sprite, Sylph, Titan, Androsphinx, Ixitxachitl, Ki-Rin...

Also, I'm throwing in Ancient versions of a lot of languages. Just call it "Ancient Common" or "Ancient Elf" or whatever.

Ultimately though, since in 1e, humans were the only race that could become the greatest wizards ever, the most important language for spellcasting documents... is Common.

If it helps Scott, Amirad (the paladin) and your character could know each other quite well. Having trained together to the 'south' and traveled up to the 'Old school' with the caravan together (remeber 1e indicates that cleric as militant orders like the knights templar). Both of us wishing to aid in the spread of the worship of Solinar in the rapidly developing (and rather chaotic, I imagine) region around the Old School.

Heck we could even be cousins or something. You could be the son of my Uncle Thomas, (the caravan fianacier) or some other relative or your own creation.

I don't think you had InVinoVeritas roll up some stats for height/weight/age secoundary skills did you? That might help with some character conception.

All of the above is merely suggestions. Do what you want! But perhaps let me know in this thread so I can react better to your character. Of course, we can just keep it vague at this point . . .

Thondor,
possible idea: our characters are cousins, one married "wrong" (my mother?) to a rival merchant family. this branch of the family tree is a pariah. our characters know this and are willing to try and heal the family scars. we can sork towards this by having been in contack through priestly channels and are now getting to the point of meeting for the first time at the tavern, perhaps. This meeting is to be a venture to getting to know one another's histories...(?)
