D&D 5E (Recruiting) Greyhawk Old-School Sandbox-Style Campaign

Noting that there was a lack of rules for mounted combat, I devised some simple guidelines in case it comes up. These are available on our Obsidian Portal site for reference (currently at the bottom).

 • Any character with proficiency in Animal Handling can automatically mount or dismount a domesticated animal trained for riding as an interaction (as per Other Activity on Your Turn, PH 190). A character without proficiency in Animal Handling must use an Action to do so.
 • A mount which is attacked (this includes spells and effects which require a saving throw) immediately gain the frightened condition unless the rider succeeds on an Animal Handling check (DC varies by circumstance). Animals trained for battle (e. g. warhorse) are an exception to this rule.
 • Any mounted character with proficiency in Animal Handling can automatically guide a mount to move its speed instead of using the character’s speed. This does not require use of the proficient character’s hands. A character without proficiency must have at least one hand free to guide a mount in the same fashion. In either case, guiding a mount to Dash also requires the rider’s Action.

I had what I thought was a great idea to have everyone get nets, and we would all try to throw nets at Grob to keep him restrained and unable to attack while we stay at range. Then I realized that Helmut is the only one in the group who can use a net. :D

At any rate, I still think it could work well, because if I hit Grob with a net he is restrained until he breaks free, which means he can't move. Breaking free requires him to use his action, which means no attack if he's breaking free. In addition, restrained gives advantage to attack rolls, which means sneak attacks for our rogues. So every round I can net Grob means a round in which he can't attack and we can sneak attack him from range. It's important to stay at range, because you can still attack while restrained, you just can't move.

I plan to have Helmut buy 4 nets at the market before we leave for Steaming Springs.

Anyone can use a net, FYI. If the character is not proficient with nets, however, the attack roll is made at disadvantage. Regardless, Helmut can easily purchase nets at a general store before heading out. No need to role-play it (unless you want to; let me know in-character).

Incidentally, I've added a new wiki page on Contracts following some of the information you now know about how they typically work in the Domain of Greyhawk.

airwalkrr Thanks for the reminder. I'll probably pick up some extras for anyone else who wants to throw a net. If I'm reading the weapon stats right, attacking with the net from more than 5' away incurs disadvantage, which is the same as attacking without proficiency. Since most people don't want to get within melee range anyway, there's no real difference.

In case you need other potential characters: John Vareen - Human Devotion Paladin of Trithereon

Custom Background:

Definining Event: John had rough beginnings and was originally little more than a barfly with exceptional skill in gambling. A selfless act by a stranger when he was laying unconscious in the gutter with alcohol poisoning may have saved his life and put him on the path of the Paladin later on:

-Skills: Deception, Insight
-Tools: Playing card set, dice set

Special feature: I propose a feature similar to either the rustic hospitality or pirate variant feature, where he doesn't gain access to places to rest or hide with locals, nor can get away with crimes committing, but has a way with locals and town guard, that if he wants to quietly go around town trying to bust gangs or stop a wife from being bashed by her husband, the town guard tend to unofficially allow his vigilantism so long as he performs actions which are reasonable, minimising bloodshed and violence, encouraging repentance etc.

Traits: Born Gambler (Charlatan), I judge people by their actions (Folk Hero)
Ideal: No good in pretending to be something I'm not (folk hero)
Bond: I swindled and ruined a person who didn't deserve it. I seek atonement but may never be able to forgive myself (Charlatan)
Flaw: I have a weakness to the vices of the city, especially the drink (Folk Hero)

John doesn't particularly look the part of a Paladin, John stands 6ft 6 inches tall, is broad shouldered and muscle-bound, but his skin is weathered and scarred from his rough beginnings, his black wavy hair is often greasy and matted, he often doesn't bother shaving and he sometimes smells of alcohol and tobacco.

On the surface, John appears to be no more than a mercenary, the identifying marks of his order often concealed by him under his cloak, he goes to the taverns to fit in amongst the drunkards, where he gambles, smokes and drinks, but also mingles; always walking the line when it comes to upholding the virtue of honesty; if others start asking too much about him, he tries to change the subject, buy them an ale, answer the question with a question or answer truthfully with "I'm actually a Powerful Paladin" as the punch-line to a joke; despite his shortcomings though, John is a kind and gentle man with a good heart.

Sorry I might have gone overboard there.

If I am understand what you are saying correctly, then I think you have something wrong.

1) If you are proficient, you add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll. If not proficient it is like making a simple ability check.

2) Attacking beyond a weapon's normal range is made with disadvantage.

Note that these are not mutually exclusive.

Sorry I haven't posted IC in a few days. Very busy life right now. I will try to get something up soon.

I'll take a look at your character sometime this week Sez. In the meantime, feel free to check out our IC thread (the link is in the first page of this thread).
