airwalkrr I'm posting here to avoid cluttering up the IC thread. Helmut's persuasion roll was just to improve Curly's attitude from indifferent. I hadn't decided yet whether to try to recruit him as a full member or as a hireling, but I appreciate the clarification of how that works. At any rate, I don't think between the 6 of us we can scrape up enough coin to pay him for more than a couple of days, so recruiting him as a full member is probably best. :D

Also, as an aside, you all are a bunch of weirdos! What has Helmut gotten himself into?

Schmoe Don't worry, you will be the father figure that Samara never had growing up. It helps that you're a soldier and her mom was a Soldier by trade... ^_^

@sithramirI don't think those stats look too bad. You have a net bonus of +2 across your stats, before racial adjustments, so it's workable. Remember this is a return to old-school gaming. Part of the charm is working with what you get.

@Spartain104Did you have anything in mind? Helmut was a sergeant in the army and was born in the Domain of Greyhawk. Any thoughts on how they might have crossed paths?

Maybe Kail and Helmut had met before sometime. Either when the army came through, or maybe after. Kail is a wandering monk, similar to a Buddhist monk. Perhaps he helped you after that fateful battle?

Yeah, that sounds good. I like the idea that Kail ran across Helmut amidst the bodies of his platoon and helped him give some dignity to the fallen. That would have helped Helmut to move on to a new chapter in his life.

Made my post and threw that in. If you want we can Ad-lib the other information/things they learnt from one another. Obviously Kail isn't much of a talker, but he's a fantastic listener. Also I threw In that his gestures would be pretty easy to read. For the most part he can convey simple emotions or statements. But for more complicated messages he might have to find other ways to communicate.

Also, good news for all. Monk's don't need money. So Kail won't be taking anything from the reward. He only takes money as charity given to him, and if he ever gains more than he needs it is given to the poor. So y'all don't have to worry about paying him gold. (good for Curly) but TREASURE might be different...

Dang, I was all excited for Curly til I found out he was just another bum Rogue... I like his attitude though. ^_^

@airwalkrr, are there such things as a 'notary public' and 'adventuring band unions' in old-school Greyhawk? If there is, Samara might have something to say about random contracts written in pubs... :)

With a DC 5 History check (which I won't even require a roll for), your character would know that there are such things as notaries public in Greyhawk. However for agreements such as this, seeking the witness signature of a respectable individual such as the owner of the establishment where it was signed would be considered just as good to most courts.

As for an "adventurers union," no such thing truly exists in Greyhawk (either the city or the setting) as adventuring is a rather uncommon profession. The closest thing would be a mercenary guild, but even the city of Greyhawk does not have such a thing.
