Reflavoring for CG/LE

I understand the reasons why the main conflict of the book is between Lawful Good and Chaotic Evil, and agree with it for the default setting. After all, the main conflict is between the organized Points of Light and the dangerous, savage wilderness.

However, what about for campaigns with a different conflict? What if the main conflict is between an oppressive regime trying to stamp out the last pockets of resistance? Where the heroes take the role of rogues and revolutionaries?

I am of course talking about a pirate campaign.

For that, I would change it so that the alignments are now Chaotic Good, Good, Unaligned, Evil, and Lawful Evil.

The following gods have their alignment changed:

Avandra: Chaotic Good
Bahamut: Good
Kord: Chaotic Good
Moradin: Unaligned
Asmodeus: Lawful Evil
Bane: Lawful Evil
Gruumsh: Evil
Lolth: Evil
Torog: Lawful Evil

Demons are now just Evil, Devils Lawful Evil.

Champion of Order becomes Champion of Freedom. Change where it says "chaotic evil" to "lawful evil," wherever it says "demon" to "devil," and wherever it says "elemental" to "immortal."

Full redone writeups of the new alignments to come.

An oppressive regime vs the last pockets of resistance is quite doable in the default framework (and fits in perfectly well with the points-of-light philosophy). The oppressive regime is Evil. The resistance is Good. You don't need separate Lawful and Chaotic modifiers because that's what Evil and Good are by default, respectively.

If the good freedom fighters are doing what is right, are they not following the standard ("law") of righteousness? And if the oppressive tyrants are evil, are they not violating that same standard, in spirit if not in letter?

It seems to me you just need to jettison the old AD&D concept of "law" and "chaos". Those words are a lot broader than merely "order" and "disorder".

Hence why I'm doing a writeup that more clearly distinguishes the CG/LE conflict. This is not meant to exist alongside the existing sytem but replace it for a singular campaign.
