D&D 4E Reimagining LotR in 4E ...

So we'll apply a little 4E cosmological and mechanical reboot to Middle Earth ...

Elrond is now an eladrin warlord.

Gandalf now gets light pipe as an at will ability, hold portal as a per-encounter ability, and smite Balrog as a per-day power.

Bilbo detects goblins no matter what weapon he is wielding. But the hobbits may, or may not, still be in Middle Earth. If they remain, they will be slender, adventurous kleptomaniacs who wear shoes.

Balrogs are demons. Morgoth is a devil. Sauron is a devil.

Mordor is now a demi-plane floating in the astral sea.

Saruman is a warlock.

Numenorean favored class is now warlord.

Uruk-hai are now tieflings.

LOL! My 2cp:

Radagast the Brown doesn't appear until Book II

Smaug gets hit by Bard's arrow, and gets an immediate counterattack on Lakeville.

Eoywn the Paladin smites the Warlock-Warlord of Angmar

Dude, Balrogs wield weapons. Clearly, they're now devils!

:D

Shelob is a demon, though.

Interestingly enough, when 3rd edition was first coming out, one of the designers said that Aragorn would probably be a 5th level character in 3.0 D&D (Fighter 1/Paladin 3/Ranger 1).

Which if you think about, makes sense, I mean, think about what your average 10th level D&D character is capable of next to any member of the Fellowship.

I dunno, Aragorn fights a WHOLE bunch of orcs at the end of Fellowship. I don't think a 4th level character could hold off that many.

Okay, it might be a little conservative, but I wouldn't put any of the Fellowship past level 7 or so (save Gandalf).
