Must be a smelly group. Unless of course they use prestidigitation regularly.

Last couple characters I've played had prestidigitation and mending so they were clear and their equipment always looked 'like new'.

I'd leave the classes with heavy armour proficiency but let them know that it is rare and that they won't be starting with it. It means those with the proficiency will be able to use it as soon as they find it. Just think of it as training that allows them to adjust to the weight and feel of the armour faster than others (who have to spend a feat to gain proficiency). It may lead to higher dexterity for those who would normally choose a strength build.

Aye, there's always someone in the party with prestidigitation. They'll use it on the smelly fighter eventually.
