Reserve Feats are Wonderful!!

I, too, like the reserve feats, and they're something I've been hoping to see for a while. Really, though, I wish I were playing a wizard instead of a sorcerer right now in one of my games, so I could use them!

You can. The descriptors say "available to be cast" not "prepared". The text on p. 37 5th paragraph that begins "A spellcaster who does not need to prepare spells (such as a sorcerer) must know..." makes it clear that the feats are intended to be used by spontaneous arcane casters too.

That said, I agree with your sentiments (and those you have mentioned on your blog) about PCs being able to do something "cool" every round or at least every combat. Granting PCs these options, reserve feats or battle manueves, is a wonderful thing.

I don't think the reserve feats are unbalanced for the very reason that Warlocklord mentions above. I also don't think that it makes the Warlock obsolete, as the warlock is far more adaptive than the one note reserve feats, and can do things even a carefully themed spellcaster with Reserve feats cannot do.

I can't wait till my Druid can take the Elemental summoning one!! That was the only one that looked cool for my current character. But I do like the idea of the feats.

how does that one work?

Have a summon nature ally spell prepared (or other elemental summoning one I imagine of 4th level or higher I think) and get a elemental. I think it is small, but larger ones can be summoned if one has a higher level spell prepared. Only one can be summoned at a time and it only lasts one round per spell level I think. As the feats go, not one of the more powerful but it fit the concept of my character.

Wizards have happily been expanding the boundaries of D&D since 3.5e came out. It's rare that a book doesn't introduce some new tweak on mechanics.

Cheers!

What a shocker. MerricB blindly and without thought aping the company line.

Obviously any new book tweaks mechanics in some way. Minimally, all this requires is one new feat.

The question that anyone with a modicum of critical sense asks is: "are the tweaks fun/useful/interesting/creative?"

Knee jerk isn't just boring, it's often wrong.

Well, your post certainly seems to prove THAT point....

Anyway, I think they have made some mistakes in implementation here and there.
But I completely agreee that the new ideas and approaches are a very good thing.

You're right. But why did you make your post into what seems to be a knee jerk reaction to MerricB, then?

The real question to ask is - "Are the posts respectful of your fellow users?"

Please, everybody, refrain from being insulting of other posters, or their outlooks on the game. If you cannot be respectful, we'll have to ask you to hold your tongue.

Sure -- I'm more referring to the fact that I'm low on feat slots as it is. Non-human sorcerer. I always find I run low on feats when I play a sorcerer, mostly because I love slapping a metamagic feat or two on my character.
