Resident Evil 0

Okay, who's got it?

I'm a huge RE nut. I've loved every game with the exeption of Nemesis (liked, not loved). RE0 is basically the same thing so far with much better graphics and an interesting twist on the character-playing process (2 at once). I like the ability to drop items but it is really annoying to only be able to hold 6 at once. I don't know if this changes later in the game but it's starting to drive me a little nuts. But, I guess that's the point. :)

Any thoughts?

While I was taking a break from Metroid, I let a friend pop in Resident Evil Zero. From what I saw, I was pretty impressed.

Gameplay wise, it's definitely typical Resident Evil stuff. It seems like Capcom doesn't force you to skimp on ammo consumption this time around, though, as you're forced to gun down hordes of zombies over and over.

It's nice that you can finely drop things from your inventory. The 'team' play options are also pretty cool, like how you can call to your partner for help from other rooms and vice versa.

Graphically, I'd go as far as saying it looks slighty better than the Resident Evil remake that was out in May, which is to say, the graphics are stunning. The cut scenes, in particular, are notably smoother and more detailed.

I have to say, I'm quickly becoming a fan of the Resident Evil franchise (I had never played them on the PS). And as good as Zero looks, I can't wait to see Resident Evil 4 in action. They're ditching the pre-rendered backrounds and sporting a full 3D polygonal engine.

In the meantime, it looks like Capcom also has some interesting original Gamecube titles coming out...

I was thinking the same thing until I got about 5-6 hours in. Man, there is so much less ammo in this version than in any other RE game. Man, I've never had to resort to using the combat knife so much before.

All in all, it's still fun tho. This game would be a great starting point for anyone looking to latch on to the RE series. You start with this, move on to the RE remake, continue on to 2 and the kinda weak (in comparison) RE3: Nemesis and then on to the best of the bunch, RE: Code Veronica. And yes, RE4 looks to improve upon what they did for Code Veronica with the full 3D thing. Looks sweet. :)

Speaking of the upcoming RE4 and Code Veronica, I have a question.

As a big fan of the RE series, but also as a die-hard Nintendo-loyalist (I know that system loyalty sounds strange, but it wasn't that odd back in the day), I was very excited to hear that all the RE games were coming to GameCube, but I haven't heard anything about RE:CV for the 'Cube yet. Anyone got any news about this?

Yup, I don't have a link but Capcom is rereleasing all the RE titles for the Cube. I think only the first one is getting an overhaul but the rest will be rereleased in order that they originally came out. This may have something to do as to why RE4 is getting pushed back on top of the development time for it. :)

Thanks for the update. I hadn't heard anything in Nintendo Power about it, nor had I on my (admittedly light) perusal of web sites on the topic. The all-new RE4 title made me wonder if it would "replace" CV. Good to know Im wrong.

There are, of course, a few RE games that won't be on the 'Cube though, if some of the stuff I've heard is true.

One is Resident Evil Gaiden, which will only be out here for Game Boy Advance.;) Though in truth, last I heard the release for that one was shaky.

I've heard something about some new RE game coming out for one of the other systems (I think it was PS2), that used an otherwise-unused subplot from RE2 (I think it was RE2, could have been RE3).

And of course, Ive heard nothing at all about a new release of Resident Evil: Survivor for the 'Cube.

The ports are solely for the core series and not the spin offs, so just RE1 through REC:V. Of courrse based on what I've read of the various spin-offs they aren't worth playing anyway.

I *really* don't understand what the allure is with those Resident Evil games. Your character walks around at a snail's pace, the controls are horrible, and you get mauled to death by the first zombie you see because you can't freaking stab it fast enough. Maybe I'm missing something, but RE is the first game I've ever returned because it was simply unplayable, and that's saying a lot.

Understandable. I have a friend who thinks the same thing. However, he is odd because he likes watching me play and helping things along. :)

The series isn't a draw for all. I like it because of the challenge and horror aspect. I like the suspense and getting the poo scared out of me. The story isn't bad, either (not great, by any stretch). I'm not in love with the control scheme, but that's part of the challenge so I live with it. Also, RE was the game that got me back in to playing videogames.

The admittedly clunky control scheme is part of what provides tension in the Resident Evil series. If RE had ultra-responsive controls akin to most adventure games and shooters, the game would be boringly easy, since a bulk of the enemies in the game are not particularly smart or fast (though there are some exceptions). All in all, most people become adept with the controls after 20 or 30 minutes of play if they've never played an RE game before.

That being said, removing the 'Control Type C' option (RE-make fans will know what I'm talking about) from RE0 was a dumb move on Capcom's part. There were a lot of people that liked those controls that found the game otherwise intolerable.

Also, Capcom will be implementing a new control scheme for RE4. It's rumored it will play more along the lines of Devil May Cry.
