Residual spell Smack Down........

Limper

First Post
Scenario: Dual between wizards. NO magic items. Level 15 with according equipment (which will NOT be on their person at the time of the fight).

How many and what spells do you have on you at the time of the fight. Through meta-magics and permanacies (no more than 10000 xps of these).

Thought I'd throw in a tough one.

NO LEADERSHIP chain of yutz cohorts casting on you either. This would imply "spell tagging" (who cast it can be determined) is in effect.

Familiar yes, components yes. 32 point buy.

I do hope I havn't forgotten something like Uranium as a spell component.

Im shooting for a dual of skill and personal preperation not the typical Smack Down of yore. What could you do in a sane environment, might be a good statement of intent.

A little bone..... the level one spell of elemental resistin has a duration of 24 hours so by level 15 with decent scores you could cast two of these with a duration of 8 days (through extend spell feat x7 + base duration) easily having all element accounted for at the time of the dual.

If you let them prep w/o limitation, things could get really messy and complicated. I'd suggest looking at the Mage Duel rules in Magic of Faerun. Generally, they suggest a few rounds of prep and no using Time Stop or Haste during this period.

Some spells I would probably cast in a similar position,

Protection from Spells (8th) -- Important if you have no magic items

Spell Turning (7th) -- This one's a no-brainer esp. to prevent spells like Dispel (+Greater Dispel) and spells requiring Fort saves (Poly Other/Disintegrate)

Contigency (6th) -- At 15th level you can attach a 5th level spell to it. Some suggestions include a personal Wall of Force, Dimension Door, or Teleport. You would have to think hard about the triggering conditions though.

True Seeing (6th) -- prevents invisibility and allows you to see through illusions

Ghostform (5th) -- super-powerful spell from T&B. Can ignore solid objects, Fly at 30 ft (perfect manuv.), 50% chance to ignore corporeal magic attacks (except force) and all your spells work normally except touch

Non-Detection (3rd) -- to help ward against divinations

Just a few suggestions, there are many more. As you can see things can get crazy quick.

Of course one of the most interesting strategies would be this,

- Take light/medium/heavy armor proficiency and martial weapon prof, Expertise, Improved Trip

- Take the feat Still spell

- Wear masterwork Full Plate and a tripping weapon like a Halbred.

- In the beginning of combat cast Anti-Magic Field around yourself and close in on the enemy. Try to trip him and used Improved Trip to get an extra attack.

Mage duel?
You only need one single spell: Antimagic Shell.
For all the posturing and preening the enemy mage is doing, short of shooting you he can't actually do anything much to you.

On your initiative count, drop the Antimagic Shell and destroy your opponent...unless he has readied actions, in which case you'll need the following:

Protection from Spells (goes without saying)
Contingency: Wall of Force (provides defense against his readied action unless it's eyebite (unlikely) or disintegrate/passwall (in which case this will still take the hit rather than you)
Protection from Arrows (why not?)
Death Ward
Negative Energy Protection
Divine Agility
Recitation
Prayer (use LW to emulate the above divine spells)
Spell Turning (obvious)
Haste
Blink
Ghostform
Polymorph Self (boost your Con and/or Dex)
Energy Immunity (you'll need all 5)
Greater Dispelling Shield (T&B, above 5 should do the trick- his spells now only have a 1 in 32 chance of getting through).
MIND BLANK
Shield
Stoneskin

For the offense, go touch attacks. These bypass almost anything. Otto's Irresistable Dance is best if he has no Mind Blank, LW to emulate Slay Living if no Death Ward.
Assuming he's hyped as above but w/o Antimagic Shell then change tack- go for summoning, carving out the biggest beasties in your repertoire.

Using Persistant spell in the morning is the best bet. I am Hasted, Kauper's Skittish Nerved, Shielded, and Mirror Moving 8 feats. All w/o spending a single xp.
