Retirement and the Dnd Character

Ath the real heart of the matter is you have a character that is real powerful how when a 'new evil sweeps the land" does he/she stay at home (examples that were given) wipeing tables down at his bar, brooding in his tower when the chance of redemption is at hand.

In my current campaign we are getting up there in lvls. My Dm in the past has used the "I'm unmotivated" attack on our characters. He says that he has a new idea for some low lvl characters and never has the motivation to plan for the older group. So our current group has surpased all others in terms of lvl and we are trying to keep going. So i was wondering If you have a group of powerful people why would they not step up to the plate and fight. Their heros afterall. I mean everyone knows Elminsters shows up every now and again to help out or give some advice.

For those people who have had characters start towns, schools, build castles, monistaries etc how do you deal with the senerio that "an evil cult has sprung up in your back yard" and you have done nothing.

For some characters (magic users) age really is no factor. They can cast spells and make potions that take care of the pesky ageing problem.
There is a related thread that deals with character death. do dms try and snipe out the high lvl cahracters so they don't have to deal with them?

Retirees often keep themselves and their money busy doing things with their time. But often find themselves staring off down that dusty road that leads out of town and into the unknown. Wishing for the campanionship of the group and the careless freedoms of the country air and the heat of battle. They find themselves reminiscing with whomever will spend an afternoon with them. Dazzling them of the tales of yesteryear or perking their interest with stories of paths they did not have time to take. Their life seems calm and serene and almost idyllic spending their last days slowly spending the loot they've acquired. But sometimes, when its late, and the tales have spun themselves to sleep, they finally cry for those companions that were slain before their very eyes. Sometimes they wake up in fright remembering thosee sleepless nights of horror or keep a steady watch for that evil that haunted them for many months or years. Thus their tale is not so great, and not so wonderful as many believe. They are remnants of a great age, remnants of time, and one day they will die, forgotten and alone.

What keeps them home is:
Family and an Obligation to protect those that depend on them

A Powerful PC has powerful enemies and if he suddenly goes off for the next three years trying to destroy the Orb of Moby then his enemies will ride in and destroy his village, slaughter his children and burn everyone he knows.

Much better to act as the Mentor of up-and-coming adventurers than be an adventurer yourself

I bet M was once a Super Spy too

I also love what dreaddisease wrote about the 'reality' of an adventurer...
