Return of the Cursed Magic Item?

What were we told about how magic item creation works in 4th edition? All I know is that we're promised that our gaming characters won't be forced to walk with tons of magical items anymore...

We have been told that it will not cost either feats or XP to create magic items in 4E.

The 3.X-D&D edition created "item weenies" in the first place.
And yes, cursed items that also do grant benefits is what we're all seemingly agreeing together.

Just make them something that people would want to keep despite the drawbacks.
The Berserking Sword is an interesting cursed item. The -2 Cursed Sword isn't at all.

Not really. "Guess what I'm thinking" DM's from first edition did. There wasnt much reason to try on items before they were properly identified, since it could mean the loss of your "junk". Hence if your DM used them... like ever... you never experimented with gear.

Ravenloft had some pretty fun stuff.

Actually the berserking sword isnt. Its an argument in a box, since someone in the party is going to get pissed about it when it backfires, as it operates on the same crappy design as the frenzied berserker (push the trouble off on your teammates!)

If you're an ally, stay away for 30 feet, hope that the sword-wielder still lives at the end of the battle. Good thing about the Berserking Sword is, unlike the -2 Cursed Sword, you can put it down, and it doesn't force you to use it every time. Also, should it happen that you're separated from your allies and have to fight alone (which might happen, after all), this sword is very handy.
So, yes, it still has its advantages and drawbacks, which is what makes this weapon leagues better than the -2 Cursed Sword.

We're thinking of different swords then. The one I remember teleported to your hand, and forced you to attack everything in sight. It was a royal pain and really disruptive to the game.

Just for the record, 3E adventures aren't entirely devoid of cursed items.

In Age of Worms we found a figurine of wondrous power which attacks the owner, a vacuous grimoire (sucks your brains out), a berserking sword (which got stuck to my wizard... good thing we didn't have any more fights before we could get the curse removed).

Maure Castle's first level has a room filled with cursed items, including the ever-popular gender-bending girdle.

According to the D20 SRD Hyperlink that provides the example of the Berserking Sword, it doesn't teleport into your hands. It may perhaps have been so in 3.0. The 3.5 edition Berserking Sword certainly doesn't do such things.

Imagine my surprise when I found out that magical swords could now be destroyed by mundane weapons too... :p

I sometimes forget that even though I am using largely the same rules as most people, my friends and I must be playing a different game. :)

Ahhh, thats it. I was referring to the 2nd edition one.
