The Ranger class has been TOO WEAK AND FLAVORLESS. In order to fix this, they add an Animal Empathy Special Ability at level one, and then remove TWF and 2 HP? This is backwards thinking! (The class may be stronger at higher levels, but is weakened at first, certainly!)
TWF was weak and still is flavorless.

PS TWF at 1st-level was called front-loading. The true master of TWF, or indeed, any combat style, is the fighter.

Agreed. I will always view any Ranger with TWF as a class ability as flawed in concept. Even though I'm not a big fan of the reduction in HD or supernatural abilities/spells on the Ranger, I can at least see how they got there. TWF as inherent in a Ranger has always baffled me.

Compared to what?

The 3.0 ranger? Sure, but that's not hard.

However, I find this who "fighting style" chain thing dubious. I think I would change it to a broader selection of bonus feats.

Compared to third party publishing? I dunno. I find the mercenary ranger and the BoHM ranger have some pretty strong points in their favor.
