Because you cannot Overrun as part of a charge.

Good thing they keep the SRD well updated, eh?

Must have been too many folks getting beat up by those big nasties doing this to them...

so, to sum up this thread to this point....

You can perform a ride by attack with any movement type as long as you follow the rules for movement.

These rules for movement seem to indicate that ride by attack can only be used in a very limited set of charge geometries, and is almost useless as written.

Did I miss anything?

I would suggest that you just disregard the PHB FAQ.

If you can Overrun as part of normal movement (a move, double move etc), I don't see why you would then discount Charge moves. Overrun, to me, seems most applicable to use while Charging...

What a ridiculous ruling.

Probably because of the 'unobstructed' line requirement for charge movement.

If disregarding rules, why not alter the charge line to any straight line that allows an attack on the target. That way you could set up a passing line, which is more or less the way knights in a joust did it. Seems to work fine for them.

That's my recommendation. Charging to only the closest square is a dumb 3.5e rule change, as is not being allowed to charge through friendly-occupied squares.
