Ring of Power

Geoff Watson

First Post
Here's an item that one of the PCs in my campaign wants. He has saved up a lot of money, and is willing to trade in other magic items if necessary.

What do you think it should cost?

Constant:

Dark Vision
Natural Armour +3
Saves bonus Resistance +2
Dexterity enhancement +4
Protection +3
+2 Charisma
See Invisible
Sustenance (as ring of)
Immunity to Disease as Periapt of Health
Mind Shield (as ring of)
Improved unarmed strike.
10 storage areas (as gloves of storing)
+5 to Bluff, Diplomacy, Disable Device, Disguise, Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Open Lock, Search, Spot

Other:

Detect magic at will
Invisibility at will
Cure Light Wounds four times a day
Fairie Fire once a day
Protection from evil once a day
Flying, two hours per day
Haste, ten rounds per day
Teleport 1/day
Heal 1/day
Polymorph self 1/day

A whole bunch.

Formula is: cost of the most expensive ability + 2x(cost of all other abilities).

Constant:

8,000 gp = Dark Vision
18,000 gp = Natural Armour +3
4,000 gp = Saves bonus Resistance +2
16,000 gp = Dexterity enhancement +4
18,000 gp = Protection +3
4,000 gp = +2 Charisma
12,000 gp = See Invisible
2,500 gp = Sustenance (as ring of)
7,500 gp = Immunity to Disease as Periapt of Health
8,000 gp = Mind Shield (as ring of)
8,000 gp = Improved unarmed strike. (wild guess on price)
22,000 gp = 10 storage areas (as gloves of storing)
5,000 gp = +5 to Bluff, Diplomacy, Disable Device, Disguise, Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Open Lock, Search, Spot

Other:

1,000 gp = Detect magic at will
20,000 gp = Invisibility at will
1,800 gp = Cure Light Wounds four times a day
360 gp = Fairie Fire once a day
360 gp = Protection from evil once a day
13,000 gp = Flying, two hours per day
8,000 gp = Haste, ten rounds per day
16,200 gp = Teleport 1/day
25,000 gp = Heal 1/day
10,000 gp = Polymorph self 1/day

The most expensive item is the storage spaces at 22, 000 gp. Everything else costs a total of 206720 gp.

22,000 gp + 2 * (206720 gp) = 435,440 gp

I would round this up to an even 500,000 gp to represent the added benefit of having so many abilities in one item.

Since this one item holds so many small bonuses, it's actually a disadvantage. For example, if you have this ring, and want a resistance cloak +5, you can't really sell the old resistance part of the ring, which is now obsolete. Enhancing the rings own abilities is also doubly expensive.

Disadvantage? Hardly, unless someone destroys it or steals it.
Sure to get +5 requires a whole whopping cloak, but some of the abilities (I'm assuming always on) are powerful enough in their own rights to warrant looking at twice. Not to mention it takes 1 ring slot to do what normally takes a character all his item slots and then some.

That ring is like The One Ring, add some more fricken abilities. Might as well have Improved Invisible up whenever worn.

Not to mention his character is out for over a year and a half making it.

If you call it Bob's Ring of the Mad Munchkin then maybe, its got too many abuse possibilities. Its 32 items in one (any one of which could be a potential issue).

hey Caliban,

isn't the most expensive ability the 'Heal 1/day' at 25,000 gp?

or am I wrong and it's only the always on stuff?

Yes it is. That still doesn't change the fact that this item should be worth 500,000 or more. This item is extremely powerful.

Isn't there some rule in the EHL that if a magic item cost more than 200,000gp it is epic.

Or was that only if one power costs more than 200k.

An item this powerful has one serious drawback: as soon as it becomes known that it exists, people will come looking for it. Big, bad people. People casting detect magic five miles away will see it twinkling on the horizon.

That 's a game drawback that depends on the campaign. Some setting that won't happen in. So, drawbacks like that are not quantifible and not real drawbacks.
