RIP ST:TNG Movies

Waiting a year won't magically make any theoretical film better.
Of course not, but waiting will make audiences more receptive. There is such a thing as burnout. I eagerly awaited and watched every episode of TNG (but for the last season or two) precisely because I wanted a Trek fix, even though, frankly, a ton of the episodes sucked. I didn't watch Voyager precisely becuase I'd had too much Trek between TNG, DS9, and the movies.

And a year is nowhere near enough. 5 years is the minimum to end the cycle, and 10 would work fine. 10 would be nice because you'd have parents enthusiastically encouraging their kids to watch Trek movies and/or shows because of fond memories, and a new generation of Trek fans would be created. Without the break you have a bunch of parents who just remember how bad Trek became and kids who are exposed to so many different movies and shows that no sense of loyalty can be formed.

random thoughts:
I thought that, instead of Insurrection, they should have done something like X-Files did: make a movie 'between the seasons', something about what the Enterprise did during the Dominion war, that might affect the next season of the series.
Enterprise was a huge disappointment the first two years, but I've rather liked the whole Xindi theme. But it's likely that the series will be cancelled this year, so we'll probably get a 2 hour movie on UPN this fall to resolve everything.
If they decide to do another ST series, how about using something along the lines of the New Frontier books: a big ancient empire near the borders of the Federation/Klingons/Romulans collapses, and all three neighbors jump into the remains to see what's there and claim territory? Set it in the time after Nemesis...

It's been touched on before, but we don't need any more TV shows or movies. We've got Star Trek: Elite Force and various other games that are better than some of the crappy episodes/movies.

Regarding Star Wars, someone said that Knights of the Old Republic is the best movie since A New Hope. Well, we need to Bioware to do a Star Trek game! That would satisfy me.

Who's doing ST: Elite Force? If they're good enough, they should stick with who developed the games. Maybe that game developer should try and based the RPG on Decipher's Coda System.

After all, KOTOR's RPG engine is based on d20.

But I don't know if it'll help motivate Decipher to get back into the PnP RPG market sooner, since they're "in limbo" right now (something about closing the office in LA and moving some of the staff to the Main HQ).

The entity that identified itself as God in STV could be considered a rogue Cytherian (the guys who made Barclay super-smart in the TNG ep "The Nth Degree"). I doubt it was a Q, as it did not display Q-Brand™ powers.

Late Addition: I've been reading a very in-depth Star Trek timeline, and according to that, STV's "God" was one of Q's buddies from way back (like several million years), called "The One," and was banished to the centre of the galaxy, and the Great Barrier was erected to imprison him. Another of Q's early friends, 0 (Zero), was banished outside the galaxy, and an energy barrier was put up around the galaxy to keep him out. I don't recall the fate of Q's third companion, (*) (That's exactly how the document identified him: (*)).

I'll agree with that. KotOR has given me a better Star Wars fix/experience than Episodes 1 or 2.

Here's the thing I don't understand - I don't grok why folks think a hiatus is necessary for people to get their heads together. Sure, people who are currently working on productions of series need to focus their attention on what they are doing, but other people can get their heads screwed on straight and think about where the franchise should go while the thing is still running. It is called processing in parallel, and it works fine pretty much everywhere. Person A worries about the now, person B worries about the future.

In Hollywood, there's usually just Person A. He or She oversees the now and the future. Or sometimes Person A is a small group of people that share that responsibility.

Anyways, what needs to happen.....is a change of leadership to more capable hands. I don't know if that'll happen though. I doubt it. Berman seems to not realize or not care that he's spent and pass due. I guess he doesn't want to give up the paycheck or the prestigous position. :)

Somehow this just makes me sad. I really love ST:TNG when it was on the air, and I'm sad that the series ended with such lame movies as Nemesis and Insurrection. I really felt that they could have done better than that. It deserved better.

I'd love to see more Star Trek Movies. I feel that the Universe still has plots and stories to offer. I just don't know what they would use if Next Gen is over. Deep Space Nine was great, but I think they ended it in such a way to preclude making any movies. Voyager, please NO! I try to pretend that this series didn't exist. Enterprise. I don't know. It just isn't sparking for me, and it's still on the air.

I don't think people are bored of the Trek Universe, I think that it needs a new spin. Perhaps letting it go fallow for a few years will respark the creative juices and respark the audience's interest. I still think that they should have gone forward in time 100 yrs for the next series and not back.

I really liked the original series. I like a lot some years of TNG. DS9 I thought was OK, but not superb. Voyager was very good IMO. Enterprise is awesome. The last movie was fun.

So... I guess I don't share most people's feelings. I want Enterprise to last as long as possible (even with its quirks). I agree that some ST producers did some mistakes, but not to the point that I want any of it stopped or destroyed.

I guess I'm easy to please.

I would be sad if they did take a break for a few years and not do anything ST related. They didn't loose THIS trekkie/trekker's attention.
