Rod of negation - what range?

Hey, all. :)

A rod of negation has recently reared it's magic-smiting
head in my campaign, and it's description isn't very clear on the
range of its effect. Let's read, hmmm?:

--
Rod of Negation (OGL, blah, blah, blah...)
This device negates the spell or spell-like function or functions of
magic items. The wielder points the rod at the magic item,
and a pale gray beam shoots forth to touch the target device,
attacking as a ray (a ranged touch attack). The ray negates any
currently active item function and has a 75% chance to negate
any other spell or spell-like functions of that device, regardless
of the level or power of the functions, for 2d4 rounds. To negate
instantaneous effects, the rod wielder needs to have used a
ready action. The target item gets no saving throw or means to
resist this effect, although the rod can’t negate artifacts (even
minor artifacts). The rod can function three times per day.

Caster Level: 16th; Prerequisites: Craft Rod, dispel magic, and limited wish or miracle; Market Price: 44,600 gp.

See, my problem is...there's no range for the ray the rod shoots.
I'm using the medium range of the dispel magic spell used at 16th level
to create it, because it's all they've given me. That makes my
ruling a ranged touch attack with a range of 260 feet.

It doesn't feel quite right for such a potent effect. Any advice or
suggestions? Before anyone remarks on this: Rays aren't only
close range, according to spell rules. Enervation, for example,
is a medium range spell.

Thanks in advance for the help, guys! :)

Let's keep it simple. Make it medium range for a 16th level caster.

260 feet.

I based this on Dispel Magic, which is both one of the spells required to craft this rod and very closely resembles the effect.

Artoomis is what we call a "skimmer". ;)

Ice Bear...that's a good idea. Hold on.

Chrono goes to the storage closet...many crashes and curses
can be heard...

Ah, here we go...dang, nothing but the "pale gray beam" bit
(wand of negation, 2E). It says in the 2E wand secton that
"wands function at 6th level for damage, range, etc..." I don't
have a 2E PHB handy, but does anyone know if that could help here?

Chrono flips through the old tome, all nostalgic and stuff. :)
