Rogue|Warlock

WHW4

First Post
Having played the ever-loving crap out of Witcher 2, I decided to build one at a low level to (potentially) play with in a 4th game our group has going.

I was interested to see what you guys came up with. Rog/Warlock was my first thought, if there's a nicer combination, I'm all ears. We are currently only 2nd level but you have to start somewhere, right? I'd like to stick close to the theme, but being able to pull my weight is super important also.

Thoughts?

That one's going to be a bit tough to pull via the Hybrid rules, but there's some overlap... Thieves can do Dex/Cha, and warlocks can go Cha/Int, so what you're probably looking at is finding a Dex/Cha race, and put 16's in those two. Put your third highest stat in Intelligence, though it may not make much difference.

I am not familiar with the Witcher. What about a Warlock appeals to you? Could you pull a reasonable facsimile by taking either Rogue or Warlock as your primary class, and just simply multiclassing into the other?

-O

Depends on what you want to do, but my preference is for Warlock with Bard multi-class. The stats overlap, you get some pretty good skill boost potential, a once-a-day healing, and access to some nifty rituals. It's a good build if you like a semi skill monkey who could also talk a princess into bed, or your worst enemy into a 100K gp loan. Also annoying as hell to the opposition, in combat, but not annoying enough that they say, "Kill THAT ONE, NOW!"

I would choose the Avenger as Witcher Character. Just do some re flavoring. It's closer to a Witcher like the ones in the books (as far as I have read).

I suppose the fun thing there (mechanically) would be Rogue|Warlock (multiclass assassin). Dex/Cha, and don't worry about the riders you won't be getting.

Take Cunning Sneak (Hybrid), and the Cursed Shadow feat from Dragon 385. Congrats, you can now make a hide check whenever you move 3 squares, even in broad daylight. Hide in Plain Sight, at will, at level 2 (1 for humans).

All that said, WHW4, you haven't really explained what the vibe you're looking for is. If you just want a dude who wields weapons and casts spells (and is dark aspected), a Hexblade or even a Warlock with Eldritch Strike might suit you fine. What is it specicially that you want to be able to do to feel more like Geralt? (or whatever his name is; I've read a few reviews and read the first book, but not the other books or played either game).

Yeah, essentially darkish type guy who can cast and use a blade somewhat effectively. I haven't read any of the books, just played this game, so I'm not familiar with much of the background/history of the character to really pull from. Just had a blast rolling around swinging wildly, throwing a spell then rolling around again. Great fun. Kind of wanted to simulate that with a character somehow.

I will check out the Hexblade (man I forget how many classes/subclasses there are now) and thank you all for your suggestions thus far.

Maybe another inspirational draw would be Kyler or Durzo from the Night Angel trilogy, if that helps at all. This is all very vague, I know, but the plethora of options in the CB make it hard to nail something down mechanically.

In addition, take a CLOSE look at powers. I'm playing a Starlock who has a few powers that target Will...and at least 2 of them reduce Will as well, leading to increased accuracy.

And according to the guy in our group who plays a rogue, some of that class' powers target Will as well.

There may be other cross-class power synergies as well.

Ok -- we've got a lot of those, really. Shadow Assassin, Hexblade, Warlock with Eldritch Strike, etc.

What kind of manuver/spell would you like to be able to do? A warlock with eldritch strike is going to be making basic attacks an OAs (and at low levels, charges) with a weapon, but her big signature attacks will be spells. Whereas, say, a Hexblade (a warlock who can summon a signature weapon with the same stats as her implement) will be making melee attacks much of the time (at will and all encounter powers, plus pact benefits from being up close and personal) and using non-weapon spells with daily attacks and when falling back to her lesser ranged attack.

Unless you need the build right this second you might wait to see the MC and Hybrid rules that they release for the Essentials classes. You might find a Hexblade/Rogue option there.

Geralt de Rivia, though a warlock (witcher) in the books, isn't the kind of warlock you find in D&D.

He's a mutant, trained beyond human limits of speed, agility and balance to be near undefeatable with a sword and to grasp the basics of magic to give him an edge over the monsters he hunts and to warn him of danger. He definitely owes no allegiance to some demon or fey, he's made no dark pact with evil to achieve his power. He doesn't curse anyone and he doesn't blast off magic spells and fight at a distance.

I don't think warlock actually fits here. Avenger gets you closer, a lot closer. So does a swordmage.

I love these books actually. The quality of the writing and the mastey of the narrative goes far beyond what is usaully found in the fantasy genre. Actually, I think the story is a masterpiece. I'd quite like to play the video game. the demo on youtube looked pretty good. I'm actuall reading the last part of teh final book in the series right now ... actually I'm going to do that literally right now :) I'll have a think and a play around with the idea another day and then come and post up a possible build.
