Rokugan D20: The Winds of Blood (Chapter 1)

Kyuzo bows his head shamefacedly, when he realizes that he allowed his own louder voice to drown out the account of the events given by the softer-spoken Michiba.

"Cheer up Kyuzo-san!" Michiba says with a laugh. "My Master always said that two perspectives are better than one. We must all work together to find and root out these bandits"

Gunso-Sensei Basho nods, listening intently, "The Black Fan, I have not heard of such a group, perhaps you should lead an investigation to find out more about them, begin with the bandit you captured."

He thinks for a moment, "Kyuzo-san, I am sure you will honor the memory of your cousin, with your actions, do not let vengeance cloud your judgement though, but I understand."

"You know what must be done, and now I must attend to the Yoriki, for such a breach of honor to have occured, punishment must be administered. Hiruma-sama will not be pleased with such, seppuku is the only avenue of honor left to the Yoriki. It is my honor to see this through. In the meanwhile you all shall act in his role, till a new Yoriki is appointed," Gunso-Sensei Basho replies as he stands and bows.

"Do your duty, and I shall do mine," he departs leaving the party to discuss their next plan of action.

"Hai, Gunso-Sensei," Kyuzo replies and bows.

When he looks around and sees his companions already partaking of the sake, Kyuzo will also do so.

Meanwhile he will study the other three persons present, trying to get an impression of them, though doing his best to avoid any impolite staring or other social gaffes.

When satisfied that nothing further can be learned or be done due the limits of courtesy, Kyuzo will address his compatriots:

"Though this rest was surely welcome, we must now do our best to fulfill our task, as set by the Gunso-Sensei. The first thing to do will be the interrogation of the captured bandit to learn anything that can be of help.
I suggest that Kaiji-san will lead the questioning, as the bandits' overwhelming fear of the Kami has already been established.
Any of you who feel this proceeding to be a blemish on their personal honor shall be excused from participating without losing face."

[OoC: Kyuzo uses his "Sense Motive" skill on the three present, within the limits set above, to learn anything he can do.]

Hai, Kyuzo-san, I agree completely. The prisioner should be our first priority. Kaiji-san, do you think that the bandit is well enough for us to question? He was knocked out when we turned him over to the Yoriki here was he not?

"I didn't think the water kami, that were so offended by the bandits would have appreciated my prayer to heal him. Now that the place has been purified, if he needs more cares to be able to speak, I think I can help him. Then, if you think his awe of the kami will loosen his tongue, I'll interrogate him."

Kaiji suddenly lowers his voice "But I think it could be wiser for us not to speak in public of our mission. I fear our talks may be heard by the wrong ears. The bandits we faced wouldn't have been a threat for a magistrate and a bushi like your cousin. I suspect the band found a leader, and his resolve is making them bold. Let's look out for anything suspicious in the village. Do you know those ronins?"

Sense Motive check results for Kyuzo, he gains nothing of value from looking over the three different Ronin, beyond the obvious, that they are most likely strangers.

The ronin in the corner, upon Kyuzo's glance about the room to gauge the attitude, raises his cup of sake, and cracks a wry smile to Kyuzo before taking another sip and resting the cup back on the table. His wide brim conical hat masking his eyes, as he adjusts himself in the chair, revealing two stark red hilts of the ronin's daisho. Though not in a manner of challenge, simply to get himself more comfortable.

The other two ronin continue to glance over to the party and speak amongst themselves, drinking their sake, the woman drnking more heavily then the man. The ronin shugenja seems to perk up at the mention of water kami.

"We would do well to not forgo our duty for the sake of comfort," replies Kyuzo to Kaiji's question and rises.

"There is much to be lost by the slow, a fate we should strive to avoid."

Kyuzo bows to the Ronin and steps outside, waiting for the others to follow him.

When they have gained some distance to the sake-house, he turns to Kaiji:

"My apologies, Kaiji-san, for not answering your question, however, I will not subject them to the indignity of having us whispering right in front of them, may they be ronin or not."

"Still, you have put forward some very valid points. In fact, I do not recognize them, and consider it strange that a yoriki in the Crab lands finds himself in need of hiring Ronin. Even then, three of them and one a shugenja! I have to admit that these facts do not reflect well on the state of this Crab province. All the more reasons to proceed with haste," Kyuzo finishes his short speech.

He turns towards his other companions:

"Do not let the urgency of our task blind you to our surroundings. Strange things are afoot here!"

Outside the party of samurai spots the bandit they had captured, the local authorities, lacking a jail-cell, have tied the bandit against a tree, he is sitting and his arms are pulled back, and tied together around the tree trunk by thick rope. He is still out cold, and two ashigaru stand guard over the Black Fan bandit.

Upon catching sight of the still unconscious bandit, Kyuzo turns to his companions:

"Well, Kaiji-san, it seems that he has not recovered his senses. Do you think a bucket of water could help facilitate that?"

In a lower voice he adds:

"It would be better if one of our number remains here to watch him at all times. He may still prove useful and, because of this, no harm should come to him, yet."
