Rowan, A whirling dervish of death, and his dance of Indecision

Moon-Lancer

So here is my question. What would be a good feat at level 9 be? I had in mind Whirlwind attack, but are their other feats that would be a better choice? Normaly whirlwind is a tough feat to acquire, but with dervish, getting into the class fills the pre req on its own. I had also thought of improved trip but i keep comeing back to whirlwind and how that has good synergy with shorten grip. so, any suggestions, thanks.

1 Monk: (cobra strike): (2 flaws) dodge, Combat Reflexes, Combat expert, Deft Opportunist
2 Monk: (cobra strike): mobility
3 Fighter: weapon focus (Glaive),Shorten Grip
4 Fighter: Power attack
5 Barb:
6 Barb:
7 Dervish: Elusive Target (player tested, dm approved... lol)
8 Dervish:
9 Dervish: spring attack, Whirlwind attack???

I saw a thread a while back (probably 12 months or so) looking at the interaction of WA with Dervish Dance... Pretty impressive in the right circumstances.

Cleave must be an attractive proposition.

And Improved Disarm (using two-handed weapon already) could be useful as it would have a higher probability of success that trip in most circumstances.

What about Extra Rage (CW)?

Secrets of Sarlona has a feat perfect for your build. Pole Master lets you treat a hafted reach weapon (glaive, in your case) as a monk weapon, meaning you can flurry with it. You already meet all the prerequisites for it.

Yes, SoS is an Eberron book, but Pole Master is about as generic and setting-neutral as it gets.

Well, sadly Rage doesn't stack with Dervish Dance... but I guess the class would be too strong then.

WWA with Dervish Dance? Hard to imagine,... well, ok, reach and Enlarge and thousands of enemies around you since you can move into the right position.

I believed how it worked was that WWA + Dance = 1 attack per 5' of movement, max of 1 attack per target per round. Somthing like that if I'm remembering correctly. So it is pretty nice. But only if you have lotsa stuff to attack. And a really good tumble. though reach helps that a lot.

I honestly wouldn't have thought Whirlwind Attacked worked with dervish dance, mainly because whirlwind attack takes a full attack action, which I believe Dervish Dance does to, and also, I didn't think you moved when performing Whirlwind.

Then theres that damned clause in whirlwind attack that doesn't allow you to combine it with anything else, such as improved trip or cleave etc.

If they dont stack, it might still be worthwhile taking it, when you can move, you dervish dance, when you're surrounded, you can whirlwind attack. Giving you slightly more flexability.

You are taking Barbarian for the movement? Did you notice that rage cannot be combined with Dervish Dance?

It does seem like Whirlwind Attack would work with Dervish Dance. The dance allows you to "take a full attack action (for melee attacks only)" and Whirlwind Attack is a full attack action. I think it would work as Vysirez describes.

@Legildur: Dervish grants Cleave at 4th level.

Ah right, I was more focused on this bit

WHIRLWIND ATTACK [GENERAL]
Prerequisites: Dex 13, Int 13, Combat Expertise, Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, base attack bonus +4.
Benefit: When you use the full attack action, you can give up your regular attacks and instead make one melee attack at your full base attack bonus against each opponent within reach.
When you use the Whirlwind Attack feat, you also forfeit any bonus or extra attacks granted by other feats, spells, or abilities.
Special: A fighter may select Whirlwind Attack as one of his fighter bonus feats.

When you start to attack, you can attack everyone within reach, that to me more or less means, as soon as you opt to Whirlwind, you attack everyone you can reach at that point, if your are moving, and up to say 40', a lot would say thats going overboard

I like your version though, the idea of whirlwind attack while dervish dancing fits the picture of a mobile whirling blade of death.

As for rage not stacking with dervish dance, well both have limited number of uses per day, so you always have 2 options open to you in most fights, dervish dance or rage. Personally I would have taken scout for dervish, get extra damage every time you move 10' or more
