RPG Crowdfunding News – Into the Mother Lands, Flash Gordon, ACE!, and more

This articles covers RPG crowdfunding campaigns that end between June 2nd and the 20th. Unfortunately, there are more RPG campaigns than I can cover each week, so this is a sampling mixing popular and some yet to be discovered options, but all are worth checking out.

Into the Mother Lands - An Original Afrofuturist TTRPG.jpg

Into the Mother Lands - An Original Afrofuturist TTRPG from Tanya DePass
  • END DATE: Sun, June 20 2021 2:59 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): To Be Determined (as explained in their Kickstarter FAQ). The concepts and world exist, the engine has yet to be determined because Tanya DePass and team are entertaining offers from a variety of publishers and they don’t want to close any doors by locking in a system. Whatever they choose, existing or original, it will represent the tone and style of the world that they’re creating.
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $25 for the PDFs of the quickstart and the sourcebook
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? 1500 years ago, humanity arrived on Musalia, a new world, far from Earth. Now, an advanced society composed of humans, indigenous species, plants, and machines thrives and adventure awaits. As a high concept it’s not bad, but what makes this project stand out are the humans, they originated from pre-colonial Africa. As a setting, it carries none of the colonial concepts that form the foundation of so much of our society, allowing for a freer, more original type of storytelling.

Flash Gordon™ RPG: Legends of Mongo, a Savage Worlds Booster from Pinnacle Entertainment Group
  • END DATE: Thu, June 3 2021 15:01 (GMT-4)
  • SYSTEM(S): Savage Worlds Adventure Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebox
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $50 + $16 US S/H for the PDF and print of the booster box with cards, pawns, charts, and more plus additional PDFs
  • REVIEW: Interested in a review of the core Flash Gordon book? I looked at it at d20 Radio (here)
  • NOTE: This campaign is available via GameOnTabletop
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? If you’re a fan of Flash Gordon and Savage Worlds Adventure Edition, this boxed set is a must. In it, you’ll get a conversion guide to bring the core game up to the latest edition of SW plus updated archetype cards and charts. The box also has 144 pawns and a 32-page sourcebook with two adventures. If a pulp sci-fi knuckle duster speaks to you, this is the setting and system you need to play.
The Awfully Cheerful Engine- An RPG of Action Comedy!.jpg
The Awfully Cheerful Engine: An RPG of Action Comedy! from EN Publishing
  • END DATE: Fri, June 18 2021 5:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebooks
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £70 + £5 US S/H for the PDF and print versions of all 5 books plus virtual tokens, maps, and more
  • INTERVIEW: At d20 Radio, I talked to Morrus about this project (here)
  • DISCLAIMER: EN World is a subsidiary of EN Publishing
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? After succeeding with both WOIN and Simply 6, Morrus has a new gaming engine, ACE! This one is designed to bring 1980s action adventure to your gaming table. Done as a series of comic sized books, this project offers a core rulebook with a foreword by Sandy Petersen (30 pages) and five genre books that use Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, and more as touchstones. Best of all, the game offers fans and publishers a free compatibility license so you can publish your own content. If you want to revisit the spirit of 80s action adventures, this system offers all of the fun of those tales.

Once More Into The Void from Genesis of Legend Publishing
  • END DATE: Thu, June 10 2021 8:58 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Mobile Frame Zero: Firebrands
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: CA$50 + CA$10 US S/H for the PDF and print versions of the game
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This game takes inspiration from Star Trek: Picard and Mass Effect 2 using the idea of a captain that must make amends with their crew. In keeping with the idea that the captain must find redemption, the game uses the mini-game structure of Mobile Frame Zero: Firebrands. This structure lets you play the story across its high points.

Good Guys Finish Last from Post World Games
  • END DATE: Wed, June 2 2021 12:15 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original storytelling superhero system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $12 for the PDF of the game
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This project reprints this RPG classic with new layouts and art. As Post World Games first license, this one comes in at 120 pages. You’ll take on the roles of superheroes as well as comic creators and a publisher telling your own story. The system allows you to define your powers without focusing on choosing from a pre-defined list. Instead, you create the hero you want to have and narrate the differences in power levels, allowing Batman to be a threat to Superman. If you’re looking for a classic with an updated look, give this one a shot.

Somninauts from Fish in the Pot
  • END DATE: Thu, June 17 2021 12:15 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original d20 system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $35 + S/H for PDF and softcover of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This RPG offers a rules light and dream based game coming in at 100 pages. Using three stats and a d20, you’ll hunt for clues in the waking world to solve issues in the surreal dream world. If this interests you, check out the basic rules via the campaign page.
Carovea Victor from Roleplay Elixir
  • END DATE: Wed, June 16 2021 9:58 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: €15 for the PDF of the book and battlmaps
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This project brings a new version of the Greco-Roman world to 5e. While the core world is akin to the Roman Empire, the surrounding states are more traditionally fantasy such as an orc empire and a dragon empire to contend with. If you’re interested, the campaign page has a free booklet to try out.

Skyjacks: Courier's Call - Season 2 from ONE SHOT Podcast
  • END DATE: Fri, June 11 2021 7:00 PM EDT.
  • PROJECT TYPE: Podcast
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $10 for a digital postcard
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Skyjacks: Courier's Call is an award nominated, family friendly spinoff of the adult aimed Campaign: Skyjacks. This actual play about delivering the mail in a world that’s a touch more anime fantasy than 5e fantasy follows the young crew of an airship. If you’re looking for all-ages actual plays, this one has a season under its belt and on the campaign page, you can try out an episode of the show.

The Deittman Files: a Ghost Hunting RPG from Alexandra Clinton
  • END DATE: Fri, June 4 2021 11:59 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Powered by the Apocalypse
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $10 for the PDF of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? In this RPG, you’ll play paranormal investigators solving mysteries. This PbtA style game utilizes 8 classes of psychics and 8 classes of investigators to deal with the paranormal. Unlike many RPGs of this type, this one focuses more on the mystery and the case than the battles.

They Stirred from Dry River Gaming LLC
  • END DATE: Sun, June 6 2021 5:03 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original collaborative system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $25 + $9 US S/H for the PDF and print copies of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Zombies took over the world, but your challenge isn’t them as much as a lack of resources and competing groups of humans. In this zombie RPG, you’ll have to make hard choices if you want to survive. If the idea of getting into the survival mindset of a zombie apocalypse appeals to you, this may fit the bill.

"As a setting, it carries none of the colonial concepts that form the foundation of so much of our society, allowing for a freer, more original type of storytelling." What do you mean by that Egg, or is that just ad copy from the game?

I am happy because all those titles have been funded and they will can be published, but we have arrived to a point where these franchises need some way to be remembered and the they can continue publishing more things. Some days ago I wondered about certain title I couldn't remembered, and it was "the lost citadel" by Green Ronin, one of the most important 3PPs and with more experience in the market since the days of 3rd Ed. Those 3PPs need something to be not forgotten and players can know when new sourcebooks have been published.

it is either a paraphrase or straight from the KS.

There's a big discussion of it: Into the Mother Lands: A Sci-fi RPG by PoC Designers

It isn't actually that's why I asked. It's isn't mentioned at all in the text.

Eugenio says "where colonialism and slavery aren't baggage for our human characters" in the video and the player of Koseh speaks of taking the colonialism and Imperialism out of exploring, so I was curious as what that phrase meant to Egg.

You should add Zomicide Chronicles that began as a boardgame (although not sure it counts as it isn't licensed just released by the same company). Also Tank Girl, Tales from the Crypt and Species are technically "The World of ..." and Dream Park is two words.

You also might want to add DNAgent Sourcebook for Villains and Vigilantes (cover on Amazon) (comic original source wiki).

Thanks a million. I added all those just now.
I've started to convert the page into a Wikipedia list, but still have a ways to go.

Eyes of Nine

Everything's Fine
  1. Into the Motherlands
  2. Once More into the Void
  3. Good Guys finish Last (my homie jim pinto is publishing)
Are all definitely back, although some maybe only at the .pdf level

Deittman Files and They Stirred are on my watch list, but with everything else (I backed Ironsworn:Starsforged last night!) they probably won't end up above the fold...

I am getting suspicious of Into the Mother Lands now. Several stretch goals are not focused on core game content, rather just optional merchandise.

Focus is pretty important. Lessons learned for the million Dollar Kickstarter of John Wick's 7th Sea is that even over a million Dollars can be exhausted if focus deviates from the core premise.

I will downgrade my pledge and watch.

Apologies for what's probably a stupid question, but what's the deal with GameOnTabletop? I keep forgetting to look at it because it has such an oddly narrow selection of projects--plenty of Torg though!--but then some campaigns there are also on Kickstarter. Is it owned by Ulisses Spiele?

Well, that was fun

No, it’s just another crowdfunding platform like Kickstarter and Indiegogo.

Kickstarter is the biggest one and attracts the most products. GameOnTabletop is smaller but some creators like it because it has much better tools for them to use. I’ve seen Green Ronin using it and Ulisses Spiele seems to prefer it too.

Much appreciated. I figured you'd have the answers!

I have not seen or heard any reference to colonialism, etc. apart from their baggage comment in the first stream, so I assume this is a reference to that.
And as I said in the ItML thread, you have to paint a very rosy picture of Mali's imperialism and useage of slavery to come to the conclusion that you would be free of colonial concepts just because the Europeans did not made contact with Mali yet when the people got transported to their new world.

Because if you look you will notice that the entire backstory is colonial. You have a group of people literally creating a colony on another planet and even go so far as to give it its own name instead of using the name the natives have for it which is a pretty colonial thing to do.
