RPG Crowdfunding News – The Islands of Sina Una, Traveller, TORG Cyberpapacy, Mummy, and more

The 22 RPG crowdfunding projects covered in this article end between Black Friday and December 5th, 2019. This is a sizeable field (with the addition of an RPG quickstarter) during some of the busiest shopping days in the US, and I’ll be interested to see if that event impacts their results.

“Inspired by Filipino mythos, Sina Una offers new player options, unique monsters, and world setting. Explore the seven isles in a brand-new campaign setting for 5e, including options for players in game, terrifying monsters to encounter, and a world rich with stories and tradition. Featuring an entire team of passionate writers, researchers, and artists all sharing their heritage to work on a project filled with passion and determination to share our culture. Sina Una will bring new ways to run or play in games, places to experience and creatures to encounter, and will be a missing link in a real-life history of inaccessible and lost mythology. If you're new to Sina Una, you can learn more about the process of making it, as well as some of the lore involved in creating our book, you can check out the pinned tweet of our co-director here to learn more. Filipino mythology is largely forgotten, with it being mostly passed by oral tradition and then swept under the rug by colonization. Most sources for it are also easily accessible only in the Philippines and we’re trying to bring them all over the world. Sina Una means “those who came first,” a homage to the fact all sources from this book are pulled from precolonial Philippines, honoring the indigenous people of the islands and shining a spotlight on their beautiful tales.”

  • PROJECT TYPE: Campaign setting
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $100 + $16 US S/H for PDFs and softcover versions of both books plus dice

“The Savage Company Campaign Setting is a compendium of military and monster-themed action designed to be compatible with the rules and campaign settings found in the First Edition of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and now also Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. We’ve played for years, writing our own rules to expand on this type of content because the material we were looking for just didn’t exist. Now we have taken all these things, greatly expanded upon them, and built the concept into a fully-fledged campaign setting that can be played on its own or placed into any existing campaign setting. Designed to expand options, but not necessarily power-creep; these crazy orcs with their guns and loud rumbling alchemical engined vehicles can be played alongside your traditional swords and sorcery content without much adjustment. The goal has been to add a lot of new content, that works with all of the existing content that is out there. Evenly mixed with vibrant artwork and thrilling stories throughout the book, this will be a joy to read even when you’re not playing the game.”
Mummy- The Curse 2nd Edition.jpg

Mummy: The Curse 2nd Edition by Onyx Path Publishing

  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $50 + S/H for the PDF, POD, and hardcover versions of the core rulebook
  • ADD-ON: $15 for seven PDFs of Mummy: The Curse 1e core rulebook and sourcebooks
“Help us create a beautiful hardcover, traditionally printed, version of Mummy: The Curse 2nd Edition and get it into stores. Imagine being both dead and deathless at the same time. Imagine being cradled in the arms of death for years, sometimes decades on end, but all the while knowing you will eventually not only arise again, but possibly awaken to an unfamiliar world. Now imagine that your purpose, your entire existence, is bound within this cycle — that you are chained to it for eternity. You sleep, you wake, your serve your Judge’s will in the lands of the living, and you return to the death-sleep once more. The ancient culture that empowered you is gone, lost to the sands of time…yet you endure. In Mummy: The Curse Second Edition, you play one of these beings. Those who know they exist, from the cultists who serve them to the dark forces arrayed against them, call them the Deathless. We call them mummies. We want to create an 8.5" x 11" hardcover with a beautifully designed, striking cover image printed on a metallic under layer, and featuring an emboss/deboss of the logo. We estimate the book to be more than 250+ pages, with a two-color interior and endpapers on high-quality paper stock. Exceptional funding may allow us to add Stretch Goals that further develop the setting and provide additional materials for play, including new Utterances, expansions to the core systems, enhanced rules for immortals and the minor guilds, and all manner of ghostly antagonists!”

Lightning War.png

Lightning War by Ben Sandfelder
  • END DATE: Thu, December 5 2019 9:00 PM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $15 for the PDF and POD versions of the core rulebook plus additional PDFs
  • NOTE: I interviewed Ben Sandfelder about this project on the Tessera Guild (here)
“A tabletop "Skirmish RPG" set in a fantasy world's World War II. Lightning War is a tabletop “skirmish RPG” set in a high fantasy world's World War II. It combines the freedom and fast gameplay of a rules-light RPG with a tightly designed combat system and mission-based game sessions. Players must use creativity, strategy, and teamwork to overcome deadly scenarios created by the GM. Think of it like a tabletop version of X-COM, with roleplaying. The world of Lightning War is a place of powerful magic, whimsical spirits, and dangerous monsters perpetually threatened by a reincarnating Dark Lord. After centuries of peace, that ancient menace returned with an insidious new strategy. Through decades of subtle manipulation, the Dark Lord turned three of the most powerful nations of the world towards fascism and evil. Those countries declared themselves the Apex Powers – the rightful rulers of the world. You play everyday people from the Allied Powers. It has only been a few weeks since the Apex Powers suddenly invaded your homelands, but it is already growing desperate. Anyone who can hold a weapon is being called to action. With meager equipment and only a few weeks of training, it will take all of your skill to survive.”

How to say it softly? Do you remember 1941 Disney movie "Dumbo"? A group of crows become friends main character and they help him to learn to fly. One's name was Jim Crow. Today this wouldn't be allowed. Other Disney movie, 1955, "Lady and the Tramp" making dogs great again!, there was a scene with two Siamese cats. Today something like this wouldn't be tolerated. Some scenes or phrases from the famous sitcom "Friends" today wouldn't be allowed.

Do you understand? Some things still are accepted but they could become politically incorrect in the future. And by a good reason, because today it's only distrust, but tomorrow will be fear, later snub, hostility, hate, and in the end psychological abuse... and psychical violence. It may be so potentially dangerous, or worse, than racism or homophobia. Please, in the name of the reason, I don't ask to agree me but to understand the point of view by the rest of the people. I am seeing the signs of danger, the same ideas in Spain in the XX century, when my grandparent were youngs, for the age of burning of convents. Take care or you will fall in the dark side of the fore.

This site - as you know, having been here since 2015 - is not the place for religion and politics. Please take this conversation to a site more suited for it.

For anyone that cares.....

The original "origin story" of the Cyberpapacy....

In an alternate dimension the Earth equivalent planet's "Pope" gets control (or controlled by) of an evil artifact that lets him take over and convert other dimensions in a sort of inquisitional invasion. The world of this pope is a late Middle Ages one, but in which magic is real and also practiced by heretics that need to be destroyed. The popes religion preaches keeping things low tech and keeping the people stupid and following the church's lead in things.

In the first few minutes this pope invades OUR (as in you the reader) Earth there is a hero from a third dimension (On in which cyberware is common) who attempts to kill him. The attempt fails but does affect the invading "reality" by altering it to incorporate cyberware into the middle ages inquisition motif.

Now the pope is the Cyberpope and his church keeps the cyberware to themselves to establish a pretty violent theocratic police state dedicated to hunting down heretics and expanding their foothold on our Earth (in France). Those that fight against the pope use stolen and bootleg cyberware to keep up. There is also a "virtual reality" level to everything called the GodNet with 90s style virtual hacking.

This was all the 90s version, I haven't read into the new one to see how things were updated.

TLDR: The Cyberpapacy is a mash up of the genres of 90s virtual reality and cyberware AND the Inquisition. The movie Equilibrium is a pretty good feel for the setting.

Villager
They changed the cyberpapacy in the new one - the cyberpapacy had already become high tech pre invading earth so the use of cybertechnology and the godnet are much more established in the setting - and of course the earth storm knights are fighting back - including the current earth pope who has denounced pope jean malraux as the antipope...
