[RPG] Magic Fixed (Hopefully)

Morrus

Well, that was fun

Well, I think I just got the magic fixed.

This is what should happen. That doesn't necessarily mean it will happen:
  • Monsters won't use spells they can't afford
  • Damage from spells depends on spell cost and your current MP (still compared against Defence)
  • MP should be deducted with each spell cast
Let me know your magic-based experiences. Assuming this works, I have a couple of plans:
  • Make MP healing cheaper, in line with HP healing
  • Introduce MP penalties for warrior type stuff (armour, shields, helms) in the hope that it'll make people either be fighty or wizardy, but not both unless they're particularly high level

Yay! no more Finger-of-death tossing kobold!

MP should be deducted with each spell cast

Do you lose MP when you don't cast spells, just attack?
Can you lose MP from receiving a hit?

I don't know much more than I posted, I'm afraid (although I doubt regular attacks will cost MP). The developer sent me the updated (allegedly fixed) file, and I uploaded it. Hopefully, people will report back on any changes.

Judge this how you will, but the Necromancer, who can do at most 39 damage (with an average of 0) to me based on strength did this:

Fighter attacked The Necromancer using Roundhouse Kick dealing a damage of 73 leaving The Necromancer with 43 HP and 104 MP

The Necromancer used magic on Fighter casting Chain Lighting dealing a damage of 4 leaving Fighter with 73 HP and 0 MP

Fighter attacked The Necromancer using Roundhouse Kick dealing a damage of 15 leaving The Necromancer with 28 HP and 97 MP

The Necromancer used magic on Fighter casting Fireball dealing a damage of 71 leaving Fighter with 2 HP and 0 MP

Well, his MP is much higher than his STR, so that sounds about right.

Did you notice whether his MP decreased correctly as he cast?

Oh, I notice that the higher level spell did less damage than the lower level spell there. That could just have been due to a really bad roll followed by a really good one, but that's a thing to keep an eye out for. As a rule, the more expensive the spell, the more damage it should do.

Nope, didn't pay attention. I was just planning on helping the bot level up a bit since he normally wouldn't be able to hurt me (on average I reduce his damage by 50 or so, his damage average being 20), but right away he hit me with some spells.

Also, it's going to be a pain to play a straight up fighter since you roll MP based attacks 50% of the time. I had to refresh around 6 times per round I think. Casters with enough MP could abuse that too, it wouldn't be hard to tank a lot of mana and then unload a horrid wilting on someone.

Edit: Not necessarily a bad roll on his part. I do have a lot more defense, reducing his damage by 50-75 fairly often.

Yeah, but if they're spending everything on Mana, they are going to have a crappy Defence. A couple of solid hits will really hurt. Especially if the MP penalties for armour get introduced.

Hmm, well I've barely dabbled in the rpg (not enough gp to equip!), but I've already gotten fireballed by an orc. :(
You mean since I started this thread or before that? If it is after the start of this thread, then MP is still bugged, because Orcs have 0 MP. If it was before the thread started, then I can still hope that MP has been fixed.
