RtTToEE

Is this thing a total dungeon crawl, or is there any bit of role playing involved. Me and some of the other players are sick of the hack-n-slash thats went on for awhile, with little role playing involved. We are about to start a camaign with the module placed in it, and if its just gonna be walk around, kill stuff, and get treasure, I don't know if I even want the DM to run it.
Your suspicions are correct.

I suggest Speaker of Dreams.

With some tooling, you can get some Roleplaying out've that.

With the Forge of Fury, you could probably get some RP out've that, if your party actually Talks to the enhabitance. Some of the encounters could, of course, be modified for better RP situations.

RttToEE is what you make of it. So far we've had plenty of roleplaying opportunities in this module. Sure - it's combat heavy and very few situations can be overcome using diplomacy because of the nature of the villains (certain areas of the temple offer possibilities for plenty of intrigue if the players are devious enough, however).
Hommlet (the starting city) and the surroundings does feature a plethora of interesting NPCs to interact with, however, and I spiced the adventure up - rpg-wise - by tying the different characters to locations, persons or the history of the area. There's much to work with here really. Tactically the module is a great exercise for any party and it has a wonderfully gritty feel to it.

If you do this, prepare for a LOT of work. The town is barely fleshed out, I understand saving space but a few pages devoted to some of the NPCs, Inns, some games at the fair, and other odds and ends would help. Also, if you read, reread it, and sit back and wonder why all these groups of people are doing this?? Sure, they are under the Speak in Dreams, but why start attacking in broad day light and not the covert operations they had been running for months. Plus, the higest level NPC is like 5th or so, the Blessed is 8th, he should be able to mop the floor with the town. Of course having Summon Monster 1,2,3,4 for a sorcerer might have something to do with it. Warning, the Blessed could be a TPK if played nastily (3 or 4 of those squid things!!!). My group just got to the half way point, so lets see what is going to happen.

As with any game I think that the number of Role playing oppurtunities in RttToEE are really down to individual party and DM styles.

Yes it is full of action and combat, but their is also a lot of possible intrigue and double dealing that can take place in the scenario if you should choose to develop that area of the scenario...

:)

I'm hoping that my RttToEE character, Shubba the Goat Boy, will be able to get some good RP out of it.

He's a half-orc orphan from the Rape of Nulb, over 20 years ago, way back when the temple first got uppity. He's not quite sure what's going down in the temple but he's in a mood for a little karmic payback.

:) You're absolutly right. Our DM has extended RttToeE: the party isn't even sure about what happens in their own stronghold. And it seems to be possible to upgrade the module to a level 14 party. About role playing: the last two sessions were only with one short fight, the rest was repairing the damage done by some cultists and getting informations. The module has enough stuff to make a long lasting, funny story out of it. I like it.

I have gotten miles of role play out of RttToEE. The key is setting it up so that there are factions among the badguys that want to use the PCs to help get rid of other factions. Or somthing like that... Just because they are evil does not mean that they can't be friendly, even for a little bit.

I'm running the module, and we've managed to get some good role-playing in. IMHO, the biggest problem with the adventure is that the levels are based entirely off XP from the monsters you fight...and there's not really any room for adding in XP from role-playing, side-treks, etc. I know several DM's that are running into problems where their party is 2-3 levels higher than they should be when they finish the first third of the module.

I agree that there's lots of room for good role-playing. Monte did a great job fleshing out Hommlet. All the NPC's have a brief description of their personality, and how they interact with two or three of the other NPC's. It really gave that town a sense of cohesion.

For more thoughts on the subject, I heartily recommend Monte's messageboards:

This is a DM-only board, and there are probably 20-30 actively posting DM's.

Disclaimers:
1) HIJACK
2) I'm skimming these posts, so as to avoid spoilers; so far, thankfully, I've gotten none.
3) I'm starting a new thread for my modifications to Speaker in Dreams. Check it out, post your own modifications, and gimme feedback if you're interested.
4) FWIW, I found the web supplement to SiD to be silly and useless to me.
