I don't think he was talking about D&D tho. I think he was referring to fencers in real life. Not to refute his point, just his example.

There is some logic to them otherwise no one would play the game. If making melee attacks was linked to charisma instead of strength or if AC decreased when carrying a shield I don't think many people would play.

In response to the thread maker: If you don't like it simply change it. Make the penalty from fighting defensivley not hamper disarm or sunder defense. In fact if you want add a +2 bonus to the characters roll since they are fighting defensively.

Actually, at least according to PHB p. 142, it just says that Total Defense is a standard action, that you can't combine it with Fighting Defensively or Combat Expertise (because you aren't taking the attack action), and that you can't make AoO. Although it might functionally be the same, it does not say that you don't threaten. And I don't see anything that precludes someone doing Total Defense from making the attack roll to avoid being disarmed (nor to attempt a disarm against an opponent who fails a disarm attempt).

So, is someone doing total defense better at avoiding being disarmed than someone fighting defensively? If so, can they get the free disarm attempt on a failure?

Simplicity of rules application makes "logical" argument in context of RPG combat (in general/most of the games) out the wazoo.

There's a difference between "credible" and "logical". Most RPG players lacks dearly in actual combat knowledge. Interpretation of rules, made to represent a reality that the creator of the rules has few if any notion of actual combat, done by a player who probably has even less of a notion of actual combat are comical at best. Less thinking, more playing!
