Rules Question about attacks and quickdraw

Himoura

First Post
A friend of mine and I were chatting about how to help ramp up his damage a little and we got on to javalins Vs Hvy crossbow for a ranged weapon, from there we got on it quickdraw.

Now the question i would like to know is it possible to have 3 hvy crossbows.
Shoot, quickdraw, shoot, quickdraw and shoot again, dropping the weapon or putting them away and having a sword in hand to take any charges.

Is this a valid use of the rules, even though it might be a little broken getting 3 hvy xbow bolts off. and the next question we were discussing is, hvy xbow D10 or D12? I thought it was a d12 with the light xbow being a d8. I would consult my books but I'm at work and of course don't have them with me

Works fine, and is even balanced against the alternatives. Heavy crossbow does d10, and you could match that with a composite longbow (Str bonus to damage). You can also only do this trick once before having to reload the crossbows, which takes a round for each.

Note that you still need to have the attacks available, so you'd need to be at least 6th level with Rapid Shot to get 3 attacks/round.

and javalins would be better average damage if you have 18 or better strength, and you can use them in one hand

EDIT: http://www.d20srd.org for all your books at work needs (well most of them... well some of them...)

we're using the knight class and are lvl 11, I was just trying to figure a way to help him a little with the damage output, it was an idea that a I'd seen used in the past with a fighter who didn't have quickdraw. He would use the hvy bow first round and then sword/shield second round.

here is something else i was wondering:
starting with sword and shield in hand. do the quick draw thing with 3 hvy xbows ending in a defensive stance with sword and shield. The defensive stance is to offset their charge, and next round they have -2 AC and the knight gets all his attacks. Not sure if this works i think its too many actions.

plus the whole fact that out other 2 melee fighters would probable have charged.

How can you fire a crossbow- a HEAVY crossbow, no less- with your hands full?

You need two hands to fire a heavy crossbow, so it's more like:

Round One:
Quickdraw- fire- drop xbow...
Quickdraw- fire- drop xbow...
Quickdraw- fire- drop xbow...
Quickdraw sword.

Round Two:
Quickdraw sword, ready shield (*takes a move action*), single attack.

I think the 3.0 ver of haste would be needed to pull off what i want to achieve I may have to play around with the idea of something else to help ramp up his damage a little

with 2 swords and light xbows you could do it in one round,

drop sword
QD crossbow-fire-drop
QD crossbow-fire-drop
QD crossbow-fire-drop
QD second sword

you would have a -2 on the crossbow attacks for using them one handed though.
