Running a 5-10 Tier game

Hi,

I very very rarely run a Tier 5-10 game (generally people cant turn up, or people complain to me about not running a 1-4 instead). Ive got a 5-10 coming up and would like some help where possible:

Im looking at the stats for a Knight who has one of these:

Leadership (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). For 1 minute, the knight can utter a special command or warning whenever a nonhostile creature that it can see within 30 feet of it makes an attack roll or a saving throw. The creature can add a d4 to its roll provided it can hear and understand the knight. A creature can benefit from only one Leadership die at a time. This effect ends if the knight is incapacitated.

Could someone point me to the page in the MM or DMG that explains how these work.

Im under the impression that a power like this requires a standard action after which the Knight could move and the 'aura' moves with the Knight in question. Is this correct or can the Knight use this, move and take his two Greatsword attacks?

Thanks

Right... Monster Manual 247.

The Knight spends an action to activate Leadership. (It's listed under Actions). For the duration of the Leadership, whenever an ally of the Knight makes an attack or save and is within 30 feet of it *at the time of making the roll*, it gets the bonus 1d4.

So: effect moves with Knight. Action to initially activate.

Does that make sense?

Cheers!

Thanks Merric. I would of found it eventually ! :) .

I also assume you meant page 347. Even after reading that section and the section on recharge abilities on page 11 it still is pretty vague about the use per day and recharge powers in terms on if they actually take an action to use.

Is it listed under actions? Actions seems bolder and has ammunition and multiattacked listed as sub headings but then reactions and Limited usage appear to use the same block and line as Actions so im not sure.

Also the way I read it the 30ft seems to move with the Knight as to get the advantage you have to be within 30 ft of the knight so if he moves around and is more than 30ft from you you wont get the boost.

Im going to go with it taking a Standard action but to be honest that whole Limited Usage section could really do with a clean up.

The entry in the MM for Knight has the header "Actions", with Multiattack, Greatsword, Heavy Crossbow and Leadership as titles. Then it has another header "Reactions" and lists Parry.

Which AL adventure are you looking at?

Cheers!

The power recharges on a short or long rest. Powers like this only have one use unless stated otherwise in the abilities description.

As a rule of thumb, most monster abilities fall into one of the following categories: Action, Bonus Action, Reaction, or Passive (passive abilities are usually listed before the action section, but may also be present in the action section if it requires them to make an attack roll).

I recall an adventure which had a Knight with the Leadership ability recently. I forget which though.

These are obviously Spoilers..

Im running Sword of Sefaril in late november (yeah a long way off) and was just looking over the scenario and the first battle with my 'average' party of 7. I noted the Veteran and 4 Knights. Im formulating up ways to use them properly (ie they would know to be within 30ft range of each other to get maximum benefit). I just realise I dont think Ive used a creature before with a limited usage 'action'. Ill probably just have the first Knight use the leadership and then let the others do the work that first round. Its a very strong ability! ( as it could push the Knights Greatword attack from +6 to +9!)

MerricB: Yeah the stat block groups then under actions. Its just the page 11 stuff that appears a little off where they put the Limited usage after the reaction stuff. Anyway, standard it is!

Its just a shame there will be no Mage!

The tags you want are [ sblock ] [ /sblock ] (remove spaces)

It goes...
ACTIONS
Multiattack
Greatsword
-- column break--
Heavy Crossbow
Leadership (recharge)

REACTIONS
Parry

[/sblock]

That's standard usage. :)

Cheers!

Yep, as its action he can use the ability. For 1 minute (10 rounds), anytime a qualifying creature makes an attack roll or saving throw *and* is within 30 feet of the knight (wherever he is at the moment), that creature gets an extra 1d4 to add to its roll. Think of it like a bless that is both better and worse than bless; Schrodinger's Bless.

Thanks. Im just hoping it dosnt end badly for the group. They havnt worked too well as a team in the 1-4 games (feels a bit like an EPL club where there are lots of 'stars' on the team who all want to be the shiny ones). One druid who just spams moonbeam most battles.
