Running multiple games in parallel?

Bonus question for the GMs replying, please - out of interest, usually what percentage of your player group is in more than one of your campaigns?
  • Campaigns running in separate settings but using the same game system and related themes.
  • Two campaigns run by different GMs in different settings that nonetheless influenced each other through different treatment of shared ideas and historical characters.
For both of those cases, there are two players in common, the same two in both cases.

Another example: the occult WWII campaign ran for thirteen-plus years with a total of seven players. One died and was replaced about ten years in, so there were always six players, plus the GM. Now there are two new strands of the campaign, in different parts of the world, each run by one of the players in the first strand, and with the GM of the first as a player in both. No, nobody has ever dropped out.

This statement caught my eye, and I thought it was worth a thread of its own, rather than derailing the original one:

I’ve never run more than a single campaign at one time. For those of you that do, how do you handle this? Multiple campaigns set in the same world? Possibly even coexisting and with the potential for the campaigns to influence each other? Or going with completely different genres to keep things straight in your head?

I've been involved in both.

As a player, I have been involved in parallel campaigns run by the same GM; the two groups were in the same game world but working toward competing goals. One time, this was in a face-to-face game of D&D 3rd Edition; one time was an online Greyhawk campaign that used GURPS 4th Edition rules.

As a GM, I have run different games (sometimes in entirely different systems) for different groups on different days of the week. This was usually the case when I was trying to both learn and run a new system and wanted to start with a subset my usual group. If things went well, it was easier to teach the rest of the group when a few other people had at least the basic ideas of the system down. I did this when transitioning from D&D 3E to D&D 4E; when first learning GURPS; and when first learning Edge of the Empire.

During early D&D 4E, there was a group with whom I played who had multiple games going at the same time because different people wanted to try GMing. It was mostly the same group but with one or two changes in personnel because of work schedules. There were games on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. At the time, my own schedule worked out that I was available for all of them, so I was.

Currently, I have so much Dungeon Crawl Classics material, that I'm considering multiple groups so that I actually get to use some of the stuff that I've bought. I haven't yet decided if the groups will be taking place in the same game world or not.

Usually none. Most of people i played with aren't willing to commit to more than one weekly game. Even when they do, life get's in the way and in the end, they need to choose one game to stick regularly or they alternate no show sessions between campaigns for some time, then just pick one at the end.
