S3: The Scythe of Seto (Bront Judging)[Completed]

ooc: By the way, with the scythe in an extra planar container, I would think it would have trouble exerting its influence on anyone outside the container.

OK. Patlin continues to be one step ahead of me, & should really earn himself another 5 points for Griffendor. But I refuse to compromise my brilliant and infinitely entertaining plotline simply b/c its been predicted and second-guessed by a clever player! Did I mention this adventure would have a 1E feel to it? Hopefully in a good way.

Beamer finds the case still in his haversack. To open it, he has to pull it out and unlatch it. He does this and finds the scythe still there. The bad dreams seem to come back to everyone more, though, as the weapon is revealed.

Meanwhile the screaming and flailing of the 5 co-campers continues to increase in violence. Suddenly the two women stop, convulse, and lie still. In the relative darkness of the night, two even darker shapes rise from the bodies. The three guards also stop screaming, and release a long breath, which is the last breath they will ever take. They all stand, their faces pale and twisted shadows of what they were. Their lips peel back from their teeth and they lunge at those who still live.

Everyone is fully armed. (Since you can sleep in light armor, and Razh was on watch.) Ogrin is next to the women who he'd been trying to help. Razh is near the fire. A knowledge (religion) skill check might reveal some information about what you face.

Initiative:
Beamer
Ogrin
S
Banion

Eusebius

I'm going to swap Eusebius and Ogrin's initiative order, if that's OK. Keep us moving here. I'd prefer to have a player NPC Eusebius. Perhaps Patlin or Slagmortar would be the best choice.

Round 1
Beamer, who has managed to close the case and shove the scythe back into his haversack, which is now lying on the ground in front of him, sees the danger and immediately goes on the offensive, sending three glowing balls of firery force shooting into one of the shades. This seems to be effective, as a patch of greater darkness seems to have been blown off the creature.

Eusebius shouts "Shadows and Wights! Seto's favored servants!" He then waves his holy symbol and calls for the undead to begone. The effect is immediate and vivid. The closer two wight's burst into bright yellow flame. They scream and stumble about before collapsing into glowing ash.

The shadows move to attack, targetting Razh & Ogrin. The shadowy hands go right through shield and armor, catching the flat-footed heroes and leaving both feeling chilled and weak (each loses 3 pts str)

Banion...

Initiative:
Beamer (25/25 HPs)
Eusebius (44/44 HPs; Used 1 Greater turning)
S (12 dmg to S1)
Banion (59/59 HPs)
W3 (W1 & W2 destroyed)
Ogrin (45/45 HPs; -3 STR)
Razh (72/72 HPs; -3 STR)

The shadow's dark, clawed hand reaches right through Ogrins shield and armor, towards his heart. Ogrin manages to twist aside, but the hand still manages to claw at him. It feels like an ice-cold sword has cut into him and he staggers backwards. "G..Get away from me, you foulspawn!"

Seeing as the being isn't hindered by steel, Ogrin drops his shield and grips his long sword with both hands. Hoping the blades enchantment will overcome the creatures intangibility, he swings at it; however, his failing strength causes his blow to fall short.

Banion bursts forth from the shadows and dramatically hurls his mindblade at the nearest undead. With great accuracy, the rapidly spinning blade slices through the spot corresponding to the creatures throat, but it finds no purchase on the incorporeal creature. Banion falls back 30' as he re-manifests his mindblade. (Having just awaken, he hasn't yet attained psionic focus, and his base speed is reduced to 30' instead of 40'.)

[sblock=ooc]Hide Check from before combat will effect attack roll; PBS included; 1d2=1 auto miss on incorporeal (1d20+15=16, 1d20+13=24, 1d6+1d4+3=11, 1d2=1)

Throw Mindblade (standard action, ends hide automatically)
Manifest Mindblade (free action)
Move 30' away (move action)[/sblock]

Rasereit (HP: 85/85, Touch AC: 11)

Rasereit lets out a yelp as the shadow's fingers brush his soul. Sapped of strength, the dwarf lets his yelp drop a few octaves and become a growl, then a roar, then a scream! His strength returns and then some, his hair bristles, and his eyes go red with rage. He, like Ogrin, casts his shield aside and wields his primary weapon with both hands. He cuts (full power attack, hits AC 26, 18 damage) into the undead before him, despite its apparent lack of tangibility.

[sblock=OOC: ]Free action to begin Rage, move action to loose shield, free action to drop it, standard action to attack the wight with full power attack.

Math on the damage roll is incorrect. Actual damage: 1 (1d10) + 6 (STR*1.5) + 10 (Full PAtk) + 1 (Magic) = 18

Rage Round 1/8
Temp. STR: 19 +4
Temp. CON: 20 +5
Temp. HP: 85/85 (12 from Rage)
Temp. AC w/o shield and w/ Rage: 18
Temp. Touch AC w/ Rage: 11[/sblock]

Round 1 (con't)
Banion steps out, hurling his blade at a shadow. It's a good throw, but passes right through the dark shape.

The remaining wight charges Banion, hurtling towards the halfling like some balefull creature of the Abyss. Banion keeps his cool, though, and easily sidesteps the charge.

Razh and Ogrin drop their sheilds and hack at their unearthly foes. Ogrin misses, but Razh slams in a powerful blow. His axe seems to sunder the fabric of the night, finishing the job that Beamer started. The dark shape in front of the dwarf is shredded, and slowly disperses on the light breeze.

Round 2
Beamer...

Eusebius calls again on the power of his god to wipe the foul undead off his beloved world. He fills the final wight with unholy fear of his divine presense.

(unless Beamer kills it...)
The final skelleton makes another grab at Ogrin, again sending chills down his spine, and weakening his resolve. (Ogrin loses 2 more points of Str)

Swallowing his fear, Ogrin lashes out again. This time, he is sure his blow should cut an arm off the creature, but his sword jsut cuts through it like air, the gash filling instantly with silky black shadow. "Not sure I can do anything 'bout this one but keep it occupied. Help?"

Beamers magical missiles surely comes at the right time.
