Sacred Cows of D&D that make it so.

The reference is to a series of novel by Jack Vance from which Gygax has said he got the system.

If I'm not mistaken it's called "Tales of a Dying Earth" Don't quote me on that though

Not just the system, but the naming convention of spells. The Dying Earth, Eyes of the Overworld and Cugel the Clever are very entertaining.

I vaguely remember reading Eyes of the Overlord long ago and from what I recall the DnD magic system is a very badly executed form of Vancian magic - so I think calling it vancian is a bit of a misnomer (and an insult to Vance)

as to Sacred Cows

Militant Clerics, Wimpy Elves, AC and +n Magic Weapons.

(I'm just so happy that noone considered THAC0 a Sacred Cow)

Tolkien-ish races that are too close to be anything else, but still not quite there...

Color by number Dragons...

Creatures that use names from myth, without at all resembling the mythology.

Armor that doesn't reduce the force of impact, but rather makes you slippery enough to get out of the way...

Cleric unpopularity (no matter how powerful you make them, you still have to do a coin toss to see who has to play it...)

Wimpy Elves
Are you just refering to the CON score, or their effectiveness in general?

If it's the second, I'd argue this one flipped in 3E from being way too powerful beforehand.

In my book, the munchkin's choice before was Elf, and today is Human. Though most of the others in my gaming group feel it's Halfling.

HP

Levels.

Classes.

Expirience points.

Alignment.

These five things have always been, and should continue to be a part of the D&D system. It always annoys me when someone says that D&D should eliminate classes and levels, or that alignment is outdated and should be eliminated. Those people don't want D&D. They want GURPS or WoD or whatever other RPG system they like feel D&D should aspire to be.

Myself, I'll happy take classes, levels, and alignments. ^_^

No way! Clerics ROOL! I actually had to outlaw a group from trying to play ALL clerics... ugh, can you think of anything more uber? I'd have to up the EL's by two just to cope!

Elves having hippie names, like Starflower, Moonbeam etc. :D

Dwarves speaking in Scottish accents, while their names and culture resembles German. ;)

The countrysides are riddled with Dungeons, which are inhabited by members of the different monstrous races. These Dungeons seem to serve no other purpose than to be ransacked and looted by the adventurers. :)

Alignment is Black and White to the extreme. No need to study psychology books, just cast detect evil.

The best ability score you can roll in character creation is 18, or three 6's, or 666!

1) People griping about things they don't like about the system while ignoring the motives behind them and the reason they still exist and making assumptions that ay or may not be true.
