save me from Quark, somebody...

First Post
I've been working in Quark for years, and although it's not the prettiest, it's always treated me reasonably well. Now I'm putting together a pdf for Print On Demand, and of course Lulu.com doesn't want embedded subsets, as far as fonts are concerned.

I can't get anything BUT embedded subsets, pdf'ing from Quark. I have tried every little bell and whistle Acrobat's interface has, and I know it's Quark's fault, not Acrobat's. I have a trial version of InDesign that embeds fonts no problem, as well as a trial of the new CorelDraw (of all things) which also embeds them fine.

But I can't afford to buy these now, and I have a 115 page book that's already laid out in Quark and is already for sale on RPGNow as a pdf.... I'm actually getting physically ill over this.

Does anyone know how to embed fonts via Quark?

Wish I could help. I gave up Quark for InDesign myself.

I would say if you're serious about publishing, you should just spring for InDesign.

Any chance you can get a student discount on Adobe software? Just a thought!

(suddenly remembers the iced tea commercial with claymation figures of Ralph Macchio and Pat Norita..."Kid? I'm 35!")

No seriously, I'm well past the point of student discounts.

And yeah, I really do want to 'spring' for InDesign. However, it's way beyond our budget at this point (at least until next tax season rolls around and my 2 and 4 year old adorable deductions do their collective thing!)

I hate to say it but I've even looked on peer-to-peer sites. And then gave up. Couldn't download anything but junk. And to be honest, I don't want bootleg software. I want to be able to update my version when the time comes, and I don't want any bad karma.

Quark people? Anybody? Anybody? Beuller?

Completely OT:
Cathix, where in South Florida are you located? I am in Miami Beach, Justin of Blue Devil Games is in Ft. Lauderdale, as is Louis Porter Jr. of LPJ Designs.

On the on-topic front:
I hadn't noticed that about my Quark, either, since I hadn't done anything for POD. I do have something coming up that I would like to POD, so I would also like to know if there's a way to embed the full set in Quark.

I'm in West Palm Beach, actually.

Yeah, it's pretty frightening...I've got a whole series of books slated for POD coming up in the next three months. Gotta figure something out.

I'm using 4.1. And I've tried both to print using Acrobat as a printer (which just spits out a complete pdf for you), and also creating a postscript file which I then drag over to Distiller.

OK. You want to go to quark's website and download their PDF export xtension for your version. This offers more control over the distiller from within quark, and should solve your problems.

I was sure their had to be an xtension to fix this. Trouble is, Quark's website is so labyrinthine I can't find the right extension to download. Maybe I'll go back tonight and look again. Thanks for the advice though. (and if you've seen the actual page with such a lovely xtension, kindly paste the url!) :D
