Scheming plots (my players stay out!) - necromancers, dragons, paladins and alienists

I need some advice from the good people of ENWorld, as I've set up a situation in my game and I'm not quite sure how to work it.

The character's are as follows:

Ishtar bat Aram (human Pal10) - Ishtar is a holy warrior of Bahamut and a stout defender of the Dareco people, a minority group persecuted for their religious differences. He has recently driven a red dragon, Khuldrax, from an ancient temple of Bahamut, and is under going negotiations with the dwarven Empire that nominally hold title to the land on which the temple exists. Unfortunately, the red's father, Karondrax, lives further up the same mountain, so that ahs to be dealt with first.

Lord Mourne Turgot (grey eleven Ari1/Wiz5/Alienist4) - Mourne is the youngest son of a Grey elven house. His father sits on the High Council, but Mourne has largely abandoned his duties to seek forbidden and forgotten knowledge. He finds Ishtar's quest rather quixotic, but is sympathetic and is certainly interested in the treasure and power that travelling with Ishtar brings. In addition, his bodyguard and aide Nym was recently cursed by a demon, and will not be free from this curse until Karondrax is dead. Mourne is rather put out by this, and wants to see Karondrax dead so he can regain Nym's services.

There's one other player Thorn, a half-elven cleric of Denarii, but the player has missed the last two sessions and doesn't figure in this particular scenario.

The players believe that Karondrax can scry upon them, and seeks revenge for his son. They think this because two Red abashai devils recently teleported into where the PCs were lunching and attempted to kill them. (Abashai, IMC, were gifted to Tiamat by Asmodeus in return for her agreeing to remain aloof from Hell's politics. Abashai = Tiamat or her worshippers taking an interest).

What the PCs don't know is that Karondrax can't scry, and that Abashai can't teleport. Instead, Karondrax enlisted, grudgingly, the help of Ugrob Deathtusk. Ugrob is a orcish necromancer and servant of Orcus. He is tolerated by other wizards because of his great power and his unusual willingness to craft and trade in magical items. For a not inconsiderable price, Ugrob agreed to scry upon the PCs (using Ishtar's blood that were all over the hands of Khuldrax when Karondrax found his body), and teleport two Abashai to their location. He did so invisibly, and then used a silent teleport to return to his location, scrying once more so that Karondrax could watch the result.

Now Mourne wants to go visit Ugrob, in order to trade spells and potentially engage Ugrob's services as a enchanter of items. Ishtar will reluctantly go with him. I'm hoping the PCs will realise that Ugrob is a valuable source of information about the dragon, something that will be very important as the dragon has been keeping a very low profile.

What I want advice on is how to handle the necromancer's relationship with the PCs. Does he offer to sell them information about the dragon straight up? What payment does he require? Does he offer to tell them that he has been working for the dragon directly? How does he react when the two people he recently scried upon show up on his doorstep?

I want the plot to be thick, but penetrable! And so, over to you? Any questions that might make things clearer, I'll be happy to answer!

PS: some fan's of Sep's story hour will probably be laughing at me right now. I just want it known that while it's been an influence on me and a whole variety of campaign elements, it's not my fault that there is a paladin and an alienist and a character named Nym. One player is a huge fan of the story hour, and has loosely modelled his character on Mostin. Nym bares no resemblence to Nwm except the name, and the alienist was created before the paladin entred the party.

Similarities were noticed. ;)

My players are fans as well and a buddy of mine LOVES mostin. I'm going to loan him the requsite Jack Vance's The Dying Earth so he can do a proper job.

Anyway...

Had I done work for a dragon and attempted via contract to assist in killing some malcontents I wouldn't lift a finger to help the malcontents. I mean, come on, one of them is a paladin. He's probably detecting that alignment dealie-wacker stuff even as I lie ... er ... speak.

In fact I'd probably get my local wizard buddies to shun the alienst. The alienst is -- by definition -- insane. Who knows what horrible monstrosity he might unleash on the world for a few minutes of fun? No, it is much better to side with the dragon and protect myself as well as I can. There is no ammount of gold that can be offered that would convince me to risk death.

Just my two EVIL cents.

I should have perhaps put the necromancer's level in: necro3/clr3/mysticthurge2/true necromancer10. He's one of the most powerful wizards in the world, with not insignificant clerical ability as well. Mourne on the other hand, is on his way up, but only just starting to make a real name for himself. Alienist or no, at the moment that's just an oddity. I've got events planned that will cause being an alienist much more trouble for Mourne, so I'm trying to make him comfortable for now.

While I take your point, I think Ugrob's secure in his own power and arrogant enough to think that playing off the dragon and the wizard might be a good time.

Not to emntion the temptaion of forcing a paladin to do work for you.

In that case ...

... can he simply deliver the items as requested but with a nasty little curse attached? Domination seems like it might be fun at parties.

Ohhhh... or those spy items that were on the Wizard's site recently. Nice.

Thinking about it, maybe half the fun would be getting the PCs to convince the necromancer to tell them things. I just kind of want them to know that they are dealing with someone who is perfectly happy to kill them if the price is right. He's a cleric to orcus, but only because of the power it gives him. He doesn't love or even like orcus, just as orcus doesn't like or love him. He is completely selfish.

I like the setup here. Very nice. A few thoughts...

When the PCs knock on his door, Ugrob is going to have a look at them via crystal ball or something before answering in person. Perhaps when he recognises them he will deal with them via a dominated minion, or a project image spell rather than in person? Just in case they've come to whack him?

I think that once he knows the PCs are after the dragon, Ugrob might take the long view. Pass off on the PCs an item of some sort that they will take after the dragon, using the spying enchantment from the Wizards website. Do not mention to them that he knows anything about the dragon at all. Then, scry on the PCs, as they investigate where Karondrax can be found. At a convenient time, allow the PCs to find a carefully crafted bit of info that will let the PCs know where Karondrax can be found, and gives enough info about him to make them just confident enough to going after him. Scry the confrontation, wait to see who wins, then teleport in (he is surely familiar enough with Karondrax's lair to do this, having worked with him), destroy the survivors, and help himself to all the PCs gear, and the dragon's hoard. If you don't want the PCs to die this way, then Ugrob might instead teleport in once Karondrax has them on their knees, kill the wounded dragon, drop a geas on the PCs while they're unconscious, help himself to any of their gear he fancies ("Oh, your Staff of Power? Destroyed by the dragon's breath while you were unconscious, sorry..."), patch them up with False Life. Game over, Ugrob wins. PCs now are geased to serve him, he has all the best stuff, and Karondrax's hoard...

Oh, and now the True Necromancer has a nice fresh red dragon corpse to play with. I'm sure he's got some fun ideas about what to do with that - mummy, wight, or spellstitched skeleton, do you think?

I second Humble Minion's suggestion. From Ugrob's perspective, this is a great business opportunity in both the short-term and the long-term. He can provide information and aid to both the dragon and the PCs, making a profit from both sides. When it comes time for either the PCs to attack the dragon or vice versa, Ugrob should provide more aid to the weaker side, making sure that they are balanced enough to seriously weaken the other. Once the battle is over (or even better, almost over), he should take out the survivors and end up with the dragon's hoard and the PCs' treasure.

By the way, how powerful is Karondrax?

If you want the PCs to try to pry info out of him, I suggest he drop clever comments of the "I know more about you than I should" variety. He want's to give away that he knows them and has information they want, but the less he has to give away, the better. That way, there's more he can charge them for.

Perhaps he offers to answer their questions on a fee per question basis, and forces them to drag the information out of him one narrowly interpreted question at a time. This only works as long as they think they need him, so he continues to offer subtle hints to put them on the paths he wants them to follow (and keep them buying more questions).

. . . . . . . -- Eric

If I were him, I'd consider working all the business with the PCs through a patsy of some sort. Best bet would be another orc with a Telepathic Bond. Just make him look thoughtful for a few seconds, when asked a difficult question!

As far as plots go, I thought the idea that Humble Minion had was great - give him a use for the Red Dragon corspse... that would give him a large incentive to help the PCs rather than sell them out to the beast.

He is a true necromacer - perhaps he has a ritual of some sort with the material component of a red dragon corpse. Personally, I always liked the look of the Nightcrawler/walker/wing series of undead... Even more amusing if, in true Frankenstein style, he can't control the monstrosity he's created. I think it would provide the PCs with an interesting insight into why sane people don't work with necromantic clerics of Orcus! :)
