Re: RE the 'official' vs third party question

Again, I return to my main point--don't blame others for not looking at 3rd party stuff. It's the responsibility of those companies to market and sell their products.

Good point but if someone has the availability to a product and decides not to buy it because it doesn't look "pretty" then that is another issue.

I agree that companies need to market their products well. If I pick up a product and it looks like it was put together by my 3 year old son I'm pretty sure I won't buy it. However, I've seen some products that were beautiful in appearance and completely sucked when it came to substance.

Apparently not, as I am still confused to what your stance is. Your statement said to me that you will not buy any product with art you consider substandard reqardless of the content.

While I disagree with his position, I think you're wrong here. He did indeed say that he won't support a company with bad art, but that doesn't mean he values art more than content. He didn't say, "I also won't buy a product with poor content but good art," but that could very well be true, in which case he values art and content equally.

There are many good reasons why some poeple (including people I game with) don't bother with 3rd party material: They don't know about it; some of it is shotty material; it often has lower presentation standards (illustrations, layout, etc); the authors are less known; and perhaps most imporantly, they are less available than WotC products.

That's a perfect example in my area. The local stores around here carry mostly Wizards of the Coast, with the occasional Fast Forward Games book, whereas I see all sorts of 3rd party stuff, because I happen to buy alot of books in Ann Arbor, like 80 miles away from where my group lives. They have good materials, that our local shops will never carry.

I'm in two games, and I've found "official" has taken on two definitions.

1. In the game I DM, "official" is anything I bring to the table.
2. In the game I play in, "official" is anything the DM brings to the table.

Been gaming for 20 years, and I've yet to see a valid reason for another definition to exist.:D

What was the Dragonomicon? Missed a lot of 2e stuff I did.

Personally, it sounds ok to me. I like WotC stuff generally better than 3rd party stuff. Not sure exactly why, but I do.

And I LOVE Reynolds' art.

All about Dragons, ... new dragons, dragon gods, dragons with classes (or did they just get more spells?), and dragon interbreeding ...

Totally off topic:
The art from the revised books is great. Finally, a good looking Blackguard (not counting the ELH).
