scribing scrolls and multiple spells on a scroll

I know it's possible to scribe multiple spells on a scroll. I don't remember if there is a limit, but the number 7 seems to pop into my head.

Anyways, when you scribe multiple spells on one scroll, is it the physical scroll that gets counted against your 1,000 gold maximum per day using the Scribe Scroll feat, or is it each spell?

In other words, can I scribe three 3rd level spells on one scroll in one day, or is it 3 days because it's 3 spells regardless of how many pieces of parchment you use?

You can put a maximum of one spell on a scroll in one day. It does not matter whether the spell is going onto a scroll that already contains spells or not.

Where does it say this please? Perhaps it's a House Rule of mine, unknowingly so, but I've always understood that it was 1 day per 1000gp of an item being created and that you could only work on one scroll at a time from spells you already had memorised. Thus you're limited to a scroll containing no more than the maximum number of spells your character is capeable of, even if you use lower level spells in higher level slots. An example would be: A scroll of 6 Mage Armor spells crafted by a 5th level caster, not counting bonus spells.

"A scroll holding more than one spell has the same width... but is an extra foot or so long for each extra spell. Scrolls that hold three or more spells are usually fitted with reinforcing rods..."

Seems that there has to be the ability to scribe multiple spells on one scroll, else this rule has no reason to exist.

I'm not sure there is a source (perhaps someone can find one). However, the question has been asked an answered by multiple "official" sources. I believe the Sage and Monte Cook have both rung in on this issue, and there were several others.

This was a common question when 3E just came out, I don't remember seeing anything more recently.

I am unaware of any "official" ruling on this, but we use a 5 spells per scroll rule. You can scribe up to 5 spells on a scroll, and if the total cost of those 5 is less than 1k, you can do it in one day.

It works quite well.

As far as I was able to locate, the rules for magic item creation say 1 day per 1000 gp EXCEPT with potions which take one day. Unless someone points out another rules citation, I'd rule each scroll takes 1 day per 1000 gp.

If you set a max spells on a scroll, I might suggest 6 because you can roll a random major scroll in the DMG (page 204) with 6 spells. Also, a scroll with more than one spell cannot fit in a scroll organizer, at least not the one described in T&B/FRCS. Just some thoughts on the subject.

OK, after some searching here is a ruling from the Sage that indirectly covers it.

"Bludgeon: Exactly how many spells can a PC with the Scribe Scroll feat write on a scroll?


The Sage: As many as that PC has the time, cash, and experience to write. There's little reason to ever put more than one spell on a single scroll, though. "

If putting more scrolls on a single scroll allowed it to take less time than putting them on mutiples scrolls, then that certainly would be considered a major reason.

As I mentioned, I know it's been ruled that each spell on a scroll with multiple spells is considered separate such that it takes a day for each spell (unless the cost is higher than 1000 gp). However, it was commented on just after 3E was released. That was several boards ago, and the messages are all gone.

That being said, I know this is one of the most common "house rules" used. Depends on how your want your campaign to run.
