I live in no state of victimhood, I just remember family members giving up on me over this game back in the 80's.

Twenty Years Ago.

Things haven't changed since then?

Sorry Darkness. Maybe I will start doing that. Though in this case it was apparently just a misunderstanding so I am glad I did not.

As I've said, not all gamers find this material harmless... or are a member of B.A.D.D, although I checked and saw that Monte Cook is. Which could explain why you lot loudly decry opinions against this material.

< sarcasm >Yeah, we've been planning this conspiracy at our secret meetings for months!< /sarcasm >

Just FYI, BADD is really nothing but a silly website. There is no club. Anyone can join just by asking, and the only benefit is that you get to put it in your signature if you want to. It's just silliness. If you insist on believing that there is some mysterious, powerful organization bent on 3E domination, you'll end up embarrassing yourself.

Just because many posters here at EN World think you're overreacting doesn't mean they're members of an evil cabaal. You are certainly entitled to your opinions, as has been said in the past. Just as others are entitled to their dissenting opinions, I might add.

Now, how about you just don't purchase the book? And let others purchase it if they want? Would that be so hard? You know, First Ammendment and all that.

Edited to make the pseudo html visible.

Ya know what folks, I still know that this book has an MATURE rating stamped on it right? Therefore those over the age of 18+ are the only ones that can buy it correct

I don't think this is correct. There is no rating system for books, and if there were, it probably wouldn't be legally binding. Just as the software and music ratings carry no weight. Local governments can decide that, say, Playboy & Penthouse magazines have to be kept behind the counter, but not that many do.

Even so, we all have a choice here. We can purchase the book, or not. And if parents are that worried what their kids are picking up in the gaming shop, then they need to accompany said kids and help them make choices that are suitable. Free will, eh?

I don't think that is quite correct.

There are some who are afraid of public-backlash. I don't blame them- some people have some bad experiences with public distaste for gaming and they don't want to go through it again.

There are others like myself- who is concerned that the BoVD will be done in bad taste, similar to the corpse copulation spell in the article.

If this was to become a popular trend and enter the mainstream of d&d books, then I would no longer be interested in playing it.

Yes. A lot of if's. That is why I am on the "wait and see" band wagon.

Monte Cook has written some great stuff and I don't think I have found any works of his in bad taste. I am giving him and the book the benefit of the doubt until the reviews are out.

For the record I pretty much agree with this 100%. I find the corpse rape spell to be highly juvenile and conducive toward bad gender politics at the gaming table. Hentai-thulhu D&D seems rather adolescent to me and I don't care to see such themes in a game that I play in. I am trying to imagine that I am a woman gamer and the male DM has an NPC do that to me. I don't think I would feel comfortable gaming with that DM any longer.

I'm hoping that Mr. Cook has produced something with a different focus and am waiting to see with great hope for some useful material.

I'm sure that there are, however, parents who have given a subscription to their kids, perhaps based on reviewing other issues of Dragon and under a certain assumption regarding the types of content in this magazine. These parents are given no warning or mechanism for screening these materials before their kids get them. Parents don't usually pre-screen each issue of their childrens' subscription magazines before letting their kids read them and I don't think that they should be responsible for doing so when they have already taken the initiative of checking on a magazine's content before subscribing their kid. I'm a bit leary of Dragon magazine sending this atypical content to their subscribed customers -- some of whom are not expecting that the magazine will ever contain this type of material.

FWIW, one of the greatest works of modern fantasy has an entire religious movement based on the idea of women raping male corpses.

Steven Erikson's Memories of Ice. An unforgettable book (not only, indeed not even primarily, for the horror of that notion) and certainly one of the most sober and honest looks at the human condition you'll find in fantasy literature. Why this author has no US publisher is beyond my ability to comprehend.

As has been discussed ad nauseum in the "D&D Childish?" thread, it's not really rules that are juvenile -- it's DMs and players. I can easily imagine a campaign in which, yes, corpses get raped, and yes, the whole thing is handled maturely and with respect for my intelligence and sensitivities.

Of course everyone has their own lines they'd rather not cross, but for me, part of the fun of gaming is the chance to explore possibilities (fanciful, foul or otherwise) I can't in real life. I'd say raping corpses fits that definition to a "T". Thank heavens.

I can see it done maturely.

Imagine the horror of a Cow, undead or not, stagger into a town. Up from it's stomach erupting the clawed, shrieking form from the spell, and unleashing the creature into the town.

Popping this spell with a 'Delay' would accomplish this.
