Search/perception

I was reading up on perception and can't find anything about search I.e. I search for traps, hidden doors, my pen ect ect. Under perception it says it's automatic as a reaction or a move action to intentionally perceive. Is there something special for searching for previous stated items.

Perception covers search in Pathfinder. So if you are looking for hidden doors then you would make a perception check.

Not sure I answered your question, so feel free to clarify and I am sure someone here can help you.

And - Welcome to EN World!

Yup, it's Perception. "Intentionally searching for stimulus is a move action."

If you want a rogue to have a chance to automatically spot traps, take the Trap Spotter rogue talent.

If you're just ransacking a room, that's an extended Perception check.

Check the table with the description of the Perception skill for a list of different types of Perception checks, including concealed & secret doors, hidden traps and more, along with a variety of modifiers depending on conditions.

Thanks for all the replies. I do know all the modifiers and what not im just wondering about the amount of time. My party was searching a building and it took us 4 hours to do so. And it was only about 30 squares. I argued that it would only take a move action per square. Or even just looking for a hidden door do you need to search for a long time or just a move action.

The rules don't have a fixed time beyond the move action, so it's mostly "whatever the GM says" if you're searching something like a building. The four hours figure may have come from the GM's memories of 3.x, where taking 20 on a Search check (what many parties default do when searching for treasure) would take two minutes for a 5' x 5' square, so an hour for an hour for a 60 x 50 area. If it was a four-story building, four hours would be about right -- but that would have given you a 20+ result for every square in the building.

Compared to Call of Cthulhu where a typical trip to the library can last four hours to net you one single useful paragraph, it's not that bad a rate. ;)

Of course, Pathfinder halves the time according to RAW, so even taking 20 in a four story building 60' x 50', you should have been done in two hours, if you really want to nitpick. You run the risk of having the GM throw dice at you if you do, tho...

I think the GM has a fair amount of discretion on determining the time it takes to search for something in a given building. An empty warehouse? Likely less time than "normal". A warehouse packed with aisles of goods? Then likely more time than "normal". Environmental considerations would factor into how long it took to thoroughly search for something in games I GM.
