Seasons Eatings

As some of us gear up for the holidays, we start to think about all the wonderful food that we will be surrounded by. I for one am looking forward to my mothers famous chocolate chip cookies and my sisters renowned brownies. Of course, we alll should eat in moderation. I for one, need to. If you are interested, there is a great article here on planning the 'perfect' holiday meal. Anyway, what iss your favorite holiday food?

For me, it's a toss up between my mother's 'Welsh Cakes", my grandmother's 4-layer trifle and mince pies (that's two different items there). Of course, I'm also looking forward to the smorgasbord of cold prawns, ham, chicken/turkey and salads that we usually have, and the barbecue on the following day (Boxing Day).

We try to go with the traditional meals sometimes, but it is usually far too hot and humid where my parents live.

I just had Jack in the Box for lunch, but the part that fits this thread is their Eggnog shake. First of the season and hopefully I'll have a couple more before the end. Their shakes typically are better than other fast food chains.

On the other hand, the local non-chain coffee joints eggnog latte sucked. Or else she didn't hear the word eggnog.

I don't really have a favorite 'holiday' food, but we certainly have holiday food traditions that I look forward to.

Every Christmas Eve, we have a fondue (the only time in the year in which we do so) which we really enjoy. The holiday season is also the only time of the year that we actually eat chocolates - there's always a box open in the living room.

Oh - I do have one favorite holiday food: "Christmas" oranges (ie. mandarin oranges).

Anyone ever have Canadian War Cake? It is a tradition in my family. It's our version of fruit cake even though we have one of those as well. I'm wondering what the origins of the Canadian War Cake is. I've found many recipes.

I think I answered this one in the pie making thread Ranger Wickett started ... it is the frozen cookie and cream ice cream mixed with pumpkin pie filling in a graham cracker crust. Delicious. Of course I have not had it for some time now, but it is DEFINITELY my favorite holiday food. :)

My aunt makes a sort of peanut butter cookie with a hershey kiss in the center. I've had these cookies in one or two other places but I'm biased towards the family recipe.

Never heard of it. What does your family usually put in it?

Who wouldn't be? Family always makes and bakes with love. That ingredient is what makes us look forward to it the next time it is made. :D

If it is what I think it is, it was invented during wartime amid strict rationing. The original recipe didn't require things like milk, eggs or butter (which were in short supply for civilians). At least thats the story from my grandmother.
