D&D 5E Second Wind Regeneration

I really, really hate to say this, but there is a wrong way to role-play a character: when the game's rules interfere with the personality of the characters in the game.
I'm not going to disagree on that point. It's just that, all else being equal, I'd prefer that players are free to give their characters whatever personality they feel like.

Either harmonoius or belligerent could be true to character, depending on the character. With a rule that you can take a Short Rest after any encounter, though, the belligerent character is at a notable in-game advantage. Not that I encourage anyone to min-max that sort of thing, but neither can you assume that every player will ignore such an advantage.

Playing a nice character shouldn't mean that you're on hard mode.

Yes. It means they have to get into a fight to use it again... because I'll toss a player whose character is self-damaging. (

Well to me it is no different than the original intent. If they damage themselves in order to heal it is just pointless and they wasted their ability.
