Black Flag Sell Me on Tales of the Valiant

If I understand rituals non casters can do them as well if they choose to spend thier resources on them
As far as I can tell, rules as written if your class doesn't give you Rituals then the only way you can get it is by taking the Ritualist Talent.

But unlike in D&D's Ritual Caster feat and Level Up's Rite Master feat, you have to already have Spellcasting to take this Talent.

Fair enough, but I stand by the point that a GM that doesn't read the rules for the game they are running is likely to do a bad job of it.
This is wrong on quite a few levels. I don't know anything and am willing to learn so that means that my games are very dynamic.
I put on a pretty good show. My players have fun and come back for more.
Again, absolutist views cut you off from what's really going on.

Counterpoint: TTRPGs are games first, and games are better when you actually know and engage the rules of those games. While there isn't necessarily anything wrong with just "doing whatever" and looking up a rule if it comes up, it is far less valuable from an actual gameplay perspective that knowing the rules and bringing them to bear in interesting ways.

Yes they are games.
Far less valuable to who? I've been DMing for over 30 years and have never been burned at the stake.

There's a free conversion guide that'll let you use any 5E subclass with Black Flag
Oh sure. The point is, I'm using these rules so as not to use WotC's. I sure can use their resources in conjunction with Tales of the Valiant, but that misses the point of why I picked it up in the first place. We'll see what they (and other companies) do, I suppose.

Sure but there are many 5E Subclasses out there not made by WOTC

Congratulations. I am not trying to change your mind.

I am just saying that rules matter to gameplay, and that different rules make for different gameplay. I don't think a GM should "run 5E just like I ran 1E." Hell, I don't think they can, if they are actually running that game that is in the book.

Neither of our minds require changing. We’re just having a nice conversation about different play styles.

I run the game that’s in the book. I just don’t read the book. I learn as I go. Every new thing I learn as I learn it affects the next session I run. My players are all usually much smarter than I am. They keep me honest.

I have nothing to add on TOV so I’ll part ways here. I’m sure we’ll meet again.

Good luck.

How can you run a game effectively if you don't read the manual?
How do you do it with a car?

If you only look stuff up when you need it, you have no idea what you don't know is in there.
if you used similar games, you are basically good to go

I would not have a problem with someone using A5e or ToV if they DMed 5e before, heck, I am not sure I would have a problem if they DMed 2e for the last 30 years instead
