[Semi-OT] Morrowind

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp I apologize in advance if this has been discussed here before. With the Search function disabled, it's tough to dig through literally tons of pages of posts to find the previous discussions on this matter.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Anyways, is this game worth buying? Is it similiar to the upcoming Neverwinter Nights, or are they significantly different from one another?

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp I'm considering buying this game, but I've heard that it's the third in the series. That means that I must buy the first two and play those first... but since, they are older and harder to find, I'm pretty up the creek. :(

It's a very nice game, but it's also quite different from Neverwinter Nights. Neverwinter Nights will be D&D based, you can get a party, has multiplayer, and most likely has a fairly linear plot. Morrowind is first-person, with no party support (that I have encountered), no multiplayer, very customizable character generation system (not so much as Daggerfall though), and is very free-form and nonlinear. What I've played of it has seemed quite nice, with outstanding graphics, and it really does feel very non-linear. As far as it being the third in a series, The Elder Scrolls series are set in the same universe, but aren't really sequels to each other. You'll be at almost no loss whatsoever in not playing Arena or Daggerfall first, since the story in this installment is unrelated to those.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Thanks for the info, galaga88! :)

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp So I suppose it's more of an anthology like the Final Fantasy series, where each installment is similiar to each other in certain ways but are still set in sepaarate universes?

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Hopefully I'll be able to purchase the game today (or at the very least, but the end of the week)... and I'll still get Neverwinter Nights when it comes out as well. ;)

Oh, no, they are in the same world. Actually, the world has got pretty detailed between all the games they've made (not only Arena, Daggerfall and Morrowind, but also the action RPG Battlespire and the adventure Redguard). The fans talked about a pencil'n'paper RPG, but I don't know if anything had been done.

Still, the tales told in each of the Elder Scrolls game are unrelated. And anyway, I played Daggerfall for almost a full year and I have never finished the main plot. I haven't even gone far into it. I just didn't care. There are so many things to do in the TES games that you don't have to follow the main quest if you don't want to.

They also created the old first person shooter Skynet (based on Terminator) around the time Duke 3d, doom 2, hexen, and Quake where big. It was a great game and also well know besides Arena, Daggerfal, Redguard and now Morrowind.

Just a little company info for ya....

Salutations,

I own the game and have never played the prequels. That fact has not stopped my great enjoyment of this game.

It is a lot of fun if you are willing to look for fun.

If you like Final Fantasy-style of crpg's (where you follow a path with few alternatives), then you might not enjoy this.

You pick a race, birthsign, and class (or design your own class). An npc gives you a quest to start you on your way, but you can totally blow that off and go anywhere you want to go.

My character is about 30 hours old, and I have yet to take one step down the "main plot" of the story. The character is too busy exploring while playing two organizations off of each other.

The only "problem" with this game is that it is a high-end game. You will need a good machine to run it with relativly free lag.

Argh.. why did you have to mention Morrowind?! Now I must get through the rest of my work day thinking about if I will go assassinate the ash-walker in the fishing town, report to Gentlemen Jim, or go explore for the missing archaelogical group in some ruins.. argh..

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Thanks everyone! I'll be trying the game out soon (before the week is out, no doubt). :)

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp I'm just worried whether or not my computer can handle the game properly. :( My system consists of:
  • Pentium 4, 1.6 GHz
  • GeForce3 Ti200 videocard
  • SoundBlaster Live! soundcard
  • 512mb DDR SDRAM
  • 16x speed DVD-ROM drive
  • 80gb hard drive
  • Windows XP Home Edition
&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Will that be enough to run Morrowind decently?

That should be quite sufficient. It won't be as fast as Counterstrike, but you should beable to get decent frame rates.

You could also go to the Morrowind boards for talk on this topic. Mang, if you thought EN World was busy, this is something else. 300,000 posts in the two weeks since the game's release, and over 13,000 registered members. Wow.
