Settings you want to like

I'll have to go with Eberron. While some parts of it sound nice, I really can't get my head around lightning rails, warforged and to some extent the airships. The Warforged rub me the wrong way for some reason.... I sometimes just attribute to I am old and stuck in my ways...

Midnight. Awesome book, great Tolkienesque flavor, fascinating premise.

But I found it unplayable, at least in a manner I could really enjoy as a DM.

Damn pity, too...
 

The one I like, but want to like more is Broncosaurus Rex. Dinosaurs and US Civil War soldiers make an interesting mix, but some of the execution leaves me a bit cold. Killing and stuffing dinosaurs you know can talk is rather disturbing and the classes are more combat oriented than what I was hoping for. If I run it, there will be some major changes.

The Hunt:Rise of Evil has some great supplements, but the corebook had me yawning. I really didn't want a group of Earth based historical nations randomly put together (as in the geography). The NPCs names are a bit dull (Ice Witch) and overall I just didn't care for it at all. The only thing I would use is the idea of dreams from one world affecting another.

Midnight- If there was a way to beat the god, then I would like it much more, but as it is, the PCs will lose no matter what. Even if all the mirrors were destroyed, the god will still get stronger over time and will destroy the planet to return to the heavens.

Yeah, I think it's a great setting. I just had to realize, though, that I have no 'feel' for that kind of Tolkeinesque fantasy. So it's really me, not the setting.
 

For me it's Eberron, though not for the reasons anyone has presented so far.

I'm usually the DM, and when I was reading through the book, I really liked pretty much everything. Then as I was reading the descriptions of the countries, I began to notice a pattern. Pretty much every country is ruled by a "good" ruler -- even if the ruler is not a traditional form of good. (By good, I mean competent and not really somebody who should be deposed.) And they all have "evil" underlings who scheme against the rulers.

I think the gnome kingdom of Zilargo was my breaking point. When it said that the gnomes were ruled by a secret organization known as the Trust, it was awesome. Visions of a gnomish 1984 Big Brother style system danced in my head. My dreams were promptly shattered when the next line said that "the Trust generally works in the best interests of the gnomes."
 

For me it' always been FR. I've read the books, I know the setting, and I like it. But as a player it's just never clicked. My group is slpit in half on which is a better setting to play in DL or FR. Since I'm a DL nut I go for that first. But as a player I find both not very player friendly. FR is too vast, IMHO it's spread too thin. In DL you almost need to know everthing to get the full enjoyment. Also the Key Of Destiny adventure is poorly written and The Anvil Of Time does way too much name dropping. I'm tired of the other players looking and me when a name is dropped and having to reply "I'm just a wild elf. Who the heck is Huma." So, as if by default, we play in GH. It's so loose, form fitting, and generic that it can fit a all of our taste.

Love the setting, have never seen useable rules for it. The huge amount of magic items in 3e don't mesh with rules for cannibal halflings and thri-kreen (or for Eberron halflings, for that matter), and there are all kind of wonky rules like weapon breakage as well. Then there's the essential defiling rules, which create great flavor but cause balance headaches.

Second edition was worse, with overpowered base races with no level adjustment (no kidding), druids being way better than clerics, terrible high rolled stats, confusing rules for templars and there's more, but I don't want to bore you.

When I heard about Planescape, I was excited. I had a character who had a sword of the planes, and by golly, what better place to use it than the planes?

When I saw it, it just didn't jive well for me. The names of the planes were changed. The art...not my style, personally. I didn't like the language either, especially the term "berk".

I've heard a lot of good things about the setting. I just couldn't get into it.


Another one for me is Shadowrun. I like the concept of a near-future world with cybernetics and rediscovered magic. Some of the setting stuff didn't do it for me, though. Unfortunately, I had a so-so DM (I'm being kind) who didn't make it all that exciting for me.

Granted, I think I prefer a more heroic campaign anyway, so by that notion, games like Shadowrun just may not jive with my tastes. *shrugs*
 

I tried to...but I just can't like Evercrack/Everquest. Especially now that they updated it. :p

In any event...nice to see no one saying Scarred Lands (yet!)

Wow! Sounds like you know more about the metaplot than we do! :p
