Horses with saddlebags and/or a cart/wagon holds all the stuff they need instead of having to trek back to town.

Mounts (Scroll 2) have slots, but there is a balancing act there as well.

I just dont think for the core loop/main approach to the game, Hirlings/Henchmen are accounted for. Not to say one cannot, as @Whizbang Dustyboots outlined, but yeah.

The cost of mounts is it's own gate, which works the same it has since the 70's.

And if they they are actual mounts, that eats into the slots available, same as if you armour them, and all that. Its another great example of design, imo.
