Shadowrun

Yeah, I know this is a D&D forum, but why would I ask elsewhere, when I can ask people whose opinions I value? ;)

I've always wanted to play Shadowrun, and now I see that it is starting to revitalize a bit, I think. For a guy who has only played D&D his whole life, is there anything in particular I ought to realize before I go out and buy the sourcebook and some premade adventures? I really just want to do some one/two-shots this summer, but I don't want to waste my money.

Thanks!

I would check out Dumpshock. It's pretty much the ENWorld of Shadowrun. To answer your question, I would just pick up the rulebook and the multi-module First Run. Every first time GM in SR should run Food Fight from it.

Couldn't have said it better.

Shadowrun is a fun game, although the rules can get a bit intense for a new player. The folks at dumpshock can give you plenty of advice on how best to deal with that though. I'll see you over there! :)

Shadowrun is my number two game! I love it to bits!! Good luck in exploring it, you will have fun! I've heard roumors of a shadowrun D20 but have no other info... safe to say, I don't like it!

One quick thing... dont let the decking rules scare you... they're not as hard as they first seem... (Looks over at his old copy of Virtual realities 2.0 and shivers.. .thank christ for 3rd edition rules!)

Dumpshock is a very good site. Havn't really been there in ages, but I'm sure it has only become better and it was already very good back then! :)

Just for the record, IMHO Shadowrun is the coolest RPG (background-wise) out there! :)

Thanks for the advice! Never would have found it myself.

One other question: Is Shadowrun like Dark Sun and Planescape kind of are now, where everything is being converted to a new system and there is not a lot of new writing going on? This is the feel I get.

Nah... the 3rd edition came out a few years ago, and they have since updated most everything from the previous editions in the supplements. New, or at least updated and expanded, setting material is being put out ... and the metaplot continues to advance (the ongoing background story that you may or may not use in your own campaign).

Shadowrun rocks - love the world - love the system. I played it from the beginning and probably did 2-3 1st edition full campaigns and then 4-5 full 2nd edition campaigns - but haven't played it since 3rd edition came out.

It does take a different mindset than D&D - but once you get immersed into the world, then it is a cool place to be. I especially recommend the early adventures and source books and the early novels, which are harder to find now, to get that original flavor.

One of these decades, I'm going to take the player journals my players gave me and put them all online... (I gave bonus karma, so almost everyone always did them) - often an entertaining read and always from the perspective of the characters.

You'll need a lot of d6's, I remeber that much. It's been about a decade since I played. It's a bit like d20 modern if you use all the D&D races in a modern time.

I've only played Shadowrun a couple of times.

My memory of it was that you rolled fistfuls of d6s.

I don't know how well the system holds up but let's pray it doesn't go d20.

If you want a d20 experience in a similar genre, perhaps look at d20 Modern.

Don't forget Shadowrun's sister RPG: Earthdawn. I believe Earthdawn is kind of a pre-Shadowrun setting set in the same world but thousands of years earlier. Earthdawn is a medieval-type tech level, swords & sorcery fantasy -- I think.
