Yes, I loved the random corpse table - nothing like throwing your PCs into an adventure by lobbing a dead body at them. :)

As for the maps, yes, I didn't like their placement - I wish they had organized the sections by sections/levels instead of levels/sections - in other words, all the upper wards, then all the middle wards, etc. - It would have made the maps a little closer to the source material they are describing. What I really need to do is two things:

1) Make loose-leaf copies of the maps (either photocopy or redraw) so I can refer to them as I read, and

2) I need to spend time making an index! GOOD LORD, THE BOOK COULD HAVE USED AN INDEX!!!!! I've commented on this to WotC, but it can't be understated! If they don't put an index with their Waterdeep Hardcover next year, they are going to have some ticked-off FR fans. :(

I wonder if WotC would give me a "Cease - and - Desist" for distributing an index?

Probably not. As long as you don't actually reprint the content of the book, you can list it all you want. There are hundreds of sites that makes list of PrCs, feats, spells, whatever. They've never objected to people copying the table of contents of their books -- indeed, sometimes those were unleashed on the web by WotC authors themselves! So why not an index?

Since I plan on getting this book for Christmas and using it to run my next campaign, I'd love it if you do this. I'll give you a big ole' hug at the next NC Game Day!*

*In a platonic, manly way of course.

I do not own the book, but your comments so far remind me of New Crobuzon from China Mievilles superb Novel "Perdido Street Station".
If Sharn is like this City I am definitely buying it.
It is and it isn't. I can see some relationship, but at its heart, Sharn is about two-fisted pulp action; Raiders of the Lost Ark or Maltese Falcon style, and the Sharn sourcebook certainly goes a long way towards enabling that feel.

New Crobuzon, on the other hand, is oppressive and vaguely social commentary. The feel is different, even if many of the details are similar.

All it needs now is a random harlot table ;)

IIRC, this was discussed on the "Ask Keith Baker" thread on the official forums. It boiled down to the fact that it would be a long time coming unless some fan(s) took up the reins.

How useful would this book be in a non-Eberron game? It sounds like it's packed with some pretty neat ideas.
There's plenty of stuff that would apply to any Urban campaign. The city itself only really requires the magic to build a city of towers. There is nothing that says you need a Manifest Zone to do this though.

Some of the NPC's and organizations are linked to Eberron, but nothing screams "can't use!" to me.

And, no one has mentioned the music CD, which I havent listened to yet. Mood music or something. :)

I know our third attemp at Eberron will be in Sharn. I'm looking forward to it. I like the idea of the magically created tall city. After playing Earthdawn for all those years, skyscraper type buildings feel like a fantasy world to me now.

Just remember: The taller the building, the further the fall...
