Shield Other Cheese

I don't understand how or why you are making this distinction.
I was responding to Hyp's point concerning a dispel magic. When combining effects, the way in which those effects are dispelled is irrelevant.

There are two magical effects on (say) the Fighter that are the same effect, but from different sources. Only one can apply.
This is not true (or more specifically not pertinent to this discussion). We have not been talking about the same effect from different sources, but the same effect from the same source (spell). I'm sure you agree, and this is probably just a slip of the tongue so to speak, but such careful terminology is important. I'm only mentioning this because if you truly did mean what you say then we have a miscommunication.

In any event, 2 Or more) Shield Other spells on the same target do not both affect that target. Only one applies, the other is overlapped.
Agreed on this. I don't agree on the example you posted that I did not quote.

Another shield other incident, with an RttToEE spoiler block:
[sblock] The dwarven cleric had the fighter shielded. The fighter just happened to be standing underneath Imix (due to size differences this wasn't a hindrance). Imix had already been having fun with his whirlwind-reliably-hit-everyone-in-the-party attack, but decided to "get rid" of the pesky fighter with a full attack. Amazingly to Imix, the fighter withstood the attack despite all of the attacks hitting. The cleric, however, didn't. He has yet to shield anyone again. [/sblock]

The way in which they're dispelled is irrelevant, but which is the weaker is not.

If this were a voting thing, I'd throw my lot in with the spells overlapping rather than stacking. That said, I've always found the best way to use Shield Other is to have a cleric cohort cast it on you, then Meld Into Stone and hit himself with Cure's every round.

Is there an offensive version of Shield Other anywhere that lets you designate an opponent that you split damage with? I think there was a spell like this in the 2e FR book, might've been called Greymantle, might not of. It's been a long time since I looked through the 2e FR book. (Though I'm pretty sure that's one of the 2e books I kept. Too many good city maps.)

Edited to correct typos. The poor sentence structure I kept.

Psionic Power Fate Link means that two creatures share each others pain, so both take whatever damage the other one takes (ow!)

Psionic Power Share Pain, Forced seems to be what you want though.

Specifically

Share Pain, Forced
Psychometabolism
Level: Psion/wilder 3
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One creature
Duration: 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates
Power Resistance: Yes
Power Points: 5

As share pain, ( This power creates a psychometabolic connection between you and a willing subject so that some of your wounds are transferred to the subject. You take half damage from all attacks that deal hit point damage to you, and the subject takes the remainder. The amount of damage not taken by you is taken by the subject. If your hit points are reduced by a lowered Constitution score, that reduction is not shared with the subject because it is not a form of hit point damage. When this power ends, subsequent damage is no longer divided between the subject and you, but damage already shared is not reassigned.

If you and the subject move farther away from each other than close range, the power ends.

You can manifest this power on two willing subjects, one of which you designate to share its damage with the other.
) except as noted here.

You attempt to force the sharing of your wounds with an unwilling creature, and for less time. If you are immune to the type of damage dealt, or if you convert lethal damage into nonlethal damage, the target takes no damage.
Augment

For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power’s save DC increases by 1.
