Shield Other Cheese

1st: The 2 clerics cast Shield Other on eachother. This effectively pools their HP.
2nd: Each cleric uses a scroll to cast Shield Other on the Fighter.
3rd: Each cleric uses a scroll to cast Shield Other on the Rogue.
Let them do it if they want to. I'd say fighter takes half damage, each cleric takes 1/4 dam (initially). So if fighter took 20, it would get distributed like this:

........Fighter
..........10hp
Cleric A......Cleric B
..5hp............5hp
..2hp............2hp
..1hp............1hp
..___............___
..8hp............8hp

So party (fighter) gets hit for 20hp damage, they end up taking a total of 36hp damage; theyv'e really outsmarted you there :D

If you are going to allow stacking of the spell (which probably isn't legal), make sure they implement it properly. They'll soon work out that Cleric B shield other-> Cleric A shield other-> Fighter
works better since this way there's no feedback effect (incidentally with 20 dam as before, Fighter takes 10, Cleric A 5, Cleric B 5).

IF damage taken by shield other was then distributed into another shield other (and since it comes from a voluntary spell it would be hard to define it as an attack) then the 2 and 1 hp would be subtracted from cleric A as they were added to cleric B and vice versa.

Fighter.....Cleric A.....Cleric b
+20.................................. (initial attack)
-5..............+5....................(A's SO on fighter)
-5..............................+5....(B's SO on fighter)
..................+2............-2....(A's SO on B)
..................-2............+2....(B's SO on A)
..................+1............-1....(A's SO on B)
..................-1............+1....(B's SO on A)
___............____ ........____...
10................5..............5.....

20 points dealt, 20 distributed.

Go ahead and put me in the multiple effects don't stack, they overlap. The shield other spells would all still be active (as far as duration and duration only is concerned). But only one shield other would work.

Also put me in the group that says CL would determine the strength in this party. If CLs were even, I'd personally say the last one cast takes effect rather than rolling randomly, but that's just my own personal gut feeling - not a rules ruling.

To make this actually work, the best you could do is this:

Code:
C<->D
^ ^
| |
A B

Essentially, Cleric C casts shield other on Fighter A. Cleric D casts shield other on rogue B. Then, the clerics cast shield other on each other. In this way, nobody is protected by more than 1 shield other spell.

The effect is that A and C take half of any attack, and a ruling could be made that each of C and D would take 1/4. That ruling would mean that you rule that the damage coming into the cleric from the Shield Other is actually an attack. [Which I don't see it that way, but some could, I suppose]

Note that this solution is effectively what happens in the OP solution anyway. Main person being attacked gets 1/2, clerics split the remaining. This just uses 4 castings, not 6.

Nah, use fireball. Then you can rofl.

In our last game the wizard and his cleric cohort both got caught in a fiery blast. Thanks to the Shield Other spell the cleric got doubly toasted and died.

Most times that I've seen it used it has been a pretty sacrificial spell.

I've had a great time DMing a group with shield other. In particular, there was the time the shielded barbarian dared a fire giant queen to hit him. She did, and he took it easily enough. So he dared her to do it again. She did, a full attack even, followed by a second full attack. All up, I think she did about 450 damage, and he was still standing. She was intimidated enough that she surrendered the entire dungeon to the group and left without a fight.

The cleric fell over after the second full attack, but the giants didn't notice. ;)

I still don't know why you'd want to shield someone else's cheese.

Because it's too gouda to lose?
