D&D 5E Shield Saltiness

TheSword

Legend
The shield is held on the back by a loop and swung forward so it can be held by the hand.
I understand his principle with a light plastic shield on a modern strap. He just hasn’t given any evidence that it could be done with an actual real shield. In a practical way. The video is comical and he is an amateur fiction writer, who doesn’t reference his sources.

Hi guys,

Our sword and board Paladin in our Curse of Strahd campaign who is usually easy-going is feeling targeted by our DM because of the rule that equipping a shield requires an action and our DM says carrying a shield in town is considered a hostile act and not done in civilized society.
Yeah an important question that was raised that probably needs an answer before people can really address this.

Was the party in the town of Vallaki at the time the DM said this?

The likelihood to be attacked in Barovia is much higher than the likelihood to be attacked in Walmart.
You've never been to a Walmart on Black Friday.

EDIT: D'oh! Ninja'd. Which is probably another thing you have to watch out for in Barovia: undead ninjas flying down from the trees.

Clearly you've never been to Little Rock, Arkansas...
That depends. Is it Black Friday, and do you have one of the last hot electronic items of the season in or near your grasp?

I think that the party will be in more danger due to being in a vampire-haunted realm than anyone will be if they go to Walmart on Black Friday. Even if they aren't in more danger than they would be in a Walmart, Black Friday is one (or two) days a year. Barovia is dangerous 24/7, with much more difficult foes than a cowboy-wannabe who would literally kill for the last iPad.

Cowobys? This ain't Texas. We're #3 in the US for deaths and injuries caused by werewolves and Dog Soldiers is an educational movie we show to 5th graders.

The reality of armor (and shields) are they're heavy, cumbersome, chafing and annoying to wear.
This is false. Armor is rarely all that heavy if you aren't exerting yourself much, and are in good shape. Only badly made armor feels heavy enough to be annoying. It certainly isn't cumbersome, chafing, or annoying to wear, unless it literally doesn't fit you or is poorly made.
