Shield Spell -- was wondering...

Ran

First Post
Well, the Shield Spell provides a cover bonus to AC, according to the rules, anyone with some degree of cover (don't remember how much exactly) is not subject to AoO...

Would shield protect someone from AoO from half the grid?

hope not...

Yes it would.

Note, however, that a lot of people have house-ruled that Sheild only gives the cover bonus to AC and none of the other benefits of cover.
Ask your DM.

Geoff.

New question then...

In fact, i am the DM now, we have just changed positions after a 1 year and a half long compaign... from 1st to 13th level and the DM got quite out of ideeas.

Anyway, we have never thought about it, as I was rereading the spell some time ago it came to me... quite powerfull for a first level spell...

Thank you a lot, it was very helpful to have some feedback before presenting the question to my group.

Oh, forgot the question...

Well, as a cover shield should also give a reflex save bonus, what is a little interesting too...

Would it give reflex save bonus?

The spell as written gives all the benefits of 3/4 cover, including the protection from AoO and the Reflex save.

The D&D FAQ says, however, that the spell should only give a +7 cover bonus (not cover) to AC. If you play it this way, it does not make you immune to AoO nor does it provide any bonus to your Reflex saves. This has not been changed in the errata so far, just the FAQ, although WotC considers the FAQ official.

Thanks a lot Dr Zoom and Geoff Watson to you help, in fact we (my former master and I) decided to keep as we used up to date, +7 cover bonus to AC only, kepping the AoOs and no Reflex save for one sole reason: the shield is invisible, as such you cannot use it to prevent being attacked (you already are harder to hit) or to hide from danger...

thanks a lot.

:)

I agree with the cover bonus to AC only; a +7 is (almost more than) enough in my book for a first-level spell...

And in my book a +7 cover bonus is quite more than enough in my book for a 1st level spell:)

I guess this should go to a new thread, but I believe that Shield is one of the spells that are far more powerfull than they should be for their level... specially if you apply all the rules accordingly.

Well, it is still personal only, but what comes when you make a scroll?? Is it personal or touch??
