Shifter powers, annoying pre-req?

I think it works thematically and mechanically. What's not to like?

(perhaps that longtooth seems to get much better benefits than razorclaw at first look?)

I think partly I was not in the right frame of mind, still thinking about 3.5 shifters.

But reading the feat Cliffwalk Shifting made me think if you wanted/needed that ability while not in combat you'd have to bang your head against the cliff for awhile before you'd shift and then be able to climb it.

I think I just like the idea thematically of shifters "popping their claws" outside of combat sometimes.

Shifters are the new emo race, since they'll always be cutting themselves.

I could just see shifter sporting events:

"Runners take your marks!"

*draws dagger*

"Runners get set!"

*stabbity stabbity stabbity*

"Go!"

And no, that doesn't fit ANY theme I can think of. Neither do half-orcs that get freaking dex. Even half-ELVES don't get dex. What a load of sillyness.

The good news is that if you fall down a deep pit and take enough damage, you can climb out.

So your saying that there is a rule in a RPG which can be made to look silly if applied to an unlikely and absurd scenario? That never happens!

You're saying a player wanting +2 movement is unlikely and absurd? Give me a freaking break, seriously, what freaking game are YOU playing? The first thing I thought of when I saw the silly thing was "hey great, I can cut travel time by 1/3 by stabbing myself."

Honestly, never crossed my mind.

Now that I see it in print, injuring yourself to 1/2 HP for a five-minute speed bump seems kinda pointless. But hey, if that's what you find fun then more power to you.

Yes because my comments about your all shifter stabby foot race being absurd clearly meant that I was really saying that nobody would ever want +2 movement speed.

And if your first thoughts when seeing the shifter were "hey I can injure myself to the point of near death to get a small speed bonus when walking around" then I have to wonder what game you are playing.

ROFLMAO!

This is the funniest thread I've read here in a week. Thanks ;)

I don't think the Razorclaw's shifting bonuses are weaker than those of the Longtooth though myself. Sure regen 2 is pretty good, but a +1 bonus to the two most used defenses is pretty good as well. In all likelyhood it will stop as much damage as the regeneration will cure, and regen doesn't prevent conditions, which are really worth stopping. At paragon/epic regen 4/6 probably are the better deal, but then again the fights where those few hit points will be the deciding edge at that level are going to be few.

Two extra move speed can be huge too. Admittedly the most advantageous use for it is hauling your wounded shifty butt out of there after the rest of the party gets wiped out, but as they say "any melee you walk away from is a victory."

And yeah, the Cliffwalk thing is awesome. Situational, but it is still rare there isn't SOMETHING you can climb in most encounters, and if it gets your squishy out of harms way, that's a good thing.

Overall IMHO I think the razorclaw is overall the better of the two. Slightly better/equal shift bonuses and better feats overall.

Besides, what DM can resist cat women?
